Whenever my birthday rolls around (it was a couple days ago) I always feel reflective. 🙇🏻‍♀️ I don’t have regrets exactly, but I definitely have things I wish I could have told myself years ago. 🤗

🌿 I wish I had started looking after my body earlier. It was really easy to not care so much about my health when I was younger, to make poor choices. I see more and more now that the way we treat our bodies when we are younger has a lasting impact... but it’s never too late to turn things around.

🌷 I wish I had placed more of a priority on my mental health. Speaking out about how I feel, taking breaks to recharge and being more selective about the people I surround myself with have been so important to my mental state.

🌻 I wish I knew that no matter how dark, hard or painful things get —- they do eventually get better. Not always in the way you hope, but they do get better. And even when things don’t get easier, you get stronger.

Last year on my birthday my dad was diagnosed with cancer. It’s my birthday today, and there is no greater gift I could have asked for than for him to be here celebrating with me today. I used to be a really big believer in ‘No Excuses’. It used to be my thing. I’d read the inspirational insta posts about HuStLE & gRiND and read the stories about those Super People who could have a successful career, study, have perfect relationships, gym every day, speak multiple languages, juggle, hold their breath for seven minutes and solve the world hunger crisis with perfectly blow dried hair. So I thought, yeah... I’ll be one of those people. 💁🏻‍♀️

So for a time there I was trying to Have It All. I was studying a full-time law double degree, working a full time job then after hours at another job, working out for 2-3 hours per day, managing a chronic illness, trying to maintain a relationship and doing a whole bunch of other really unnecessary rubbish... anyone want to guess what happened? Anybody?

Everything fell to 💩 because I was doing a lot but I wasn’t doing anything well. I stopped getting enough sleep, I made myself incredibly stressed, I got sick. We feel this amazing pressure to be doing everything, all the time... but it’s okay to put your effort and focus into doing a few things well and with passion. It’s okay to be kinder to yourself. If you’re sick, don’t go to the gym. 🤷🏻‍♀️ If you’re really run down, take a mental health day. 🤷🏻‍♀️ If you’re just being lazy and you know you’re being lazy, get your butt in gear. 🍑 But sometimes doing everything and insisting on no excuses just leads to burn out. 🔥

The word balance gets thrown around a lot, but honestly... are there areas of your life you’re not putting enough effort into? Are there areas you’re putting too much? Are you doing things you don’t love, enjoy, or feel passionate about? Should we all just move to the middle of nowhere, live in tents and drink cups of tea? ☕️ There’s nothing wrong with not doing Everything... and being selective about what gets your time and what doesn’t doesn’t mean you’re making excuses. Just prioritising. 🤗

It’s like the same thing as yoga, yeah?” — me before I ever stepped inside a studio. 😂 Since I plucked up the courage to go to my first assessment clinical Pilates had been a constant in my life and has complemented my #bbg, #pwr & other training perfectly. 🙌 It has nursed me through injuries, #lupus flares and really challenged me. My favourite thing about it is how #flexible it is — I can go on days where I feel I can barely move and do gentle stretching, slow and controlled movements and it’s very #rehab based. Then I go on good days (☝️☝️) and I leave with a proper sweat & sore the next day. I’m so proud of the progress I’ve made. 🙈 I wish I’d listened to my Physio and started going sooner. 🙌 // @korpermotus & my fave teacher @clancyjs 💕

Winter joint pain ❄️ arthritis, joint pain & autoimmune symptoms can affect people year round, but I know that for a lot of us cold & wet weather can make it harder to manage symptoms. It’s heading into winter now in Australia and I’m starting to feel the effects, so I thought I’d talk about how I manage it. 🙋🏻‍♀️

Exercise 🏋🏻‍♀️ When I’m sore I tend to stick to low impact exercise so I don’t cause further irritation to my joints, but I’ve found it really important to keep moving❗️Its hard to stay motivated in winter but I know that for me immobility can actually make my joint pain worse. Over time strengthening the muscles around sore joints has increased my stability and range of motion. Exercise has been shown to reduce joint pain, increase strength and flexibility, and can combat fatigue. 🤸🏻‍♀️ If it’s really chilly I stick to an at home workout routine, stretching, or walking on a treadmill.

Vitamin D ☀️ I get my vitamin D levels checked regularly by my doctor, low levels of Vitamin D have been associated with sensitivity to pain & more severe clinical manifestations. When I’m low my doc advises me to take a supplement. 🤓 I also take a fish oil supplement daily, and if I’m having a particularly painful day epsom salt (magnesium) baths can make all the difference.

Dressing Warmly 🧤 I stick to layers of lighter fabrics because of my joints are really sore I can struggle to grip heavier fabrics. Gloves are my best friend. 🤗

Stress 😖 it’s so well documented how much stress can negatively affect your body. I place a priority on my mental health, so I try (“TRY” 😂) to get enough sleep, meditate for at least 10 minutes a day, watch movies that make me laugh and drink enough peppermint tea to sink a small boat.

Your Doctor 💊 My exercise regime, my supplements, everything I do is run past my doctors and often they have really great suggestions for managing my symptoms. If you’re struggling I think your doctor should definitely be your first point of call.

I’m incredibly sentimental, especially when it comes to jewellery. 🙊 I only  wear pieces that hold a lot of meaning to me... so when I finally got the chance to have a piece made by @object_maker I was so excited. (I’ve wanted one for years.)

I’ve never had anything made JUST for me before and the whole process was so awesome. 😍 @object_maker drew up some beautiful designs (swipe right to see) that he felt ‘suited my situation’ and I was so touched. ➖
I’ve been going through a bit of a tough time recently (you might have noticed I haven’t been as active the last week or two) so when I saw his design for the ‘ring of endurance’ I knew that was the piece for me. ❤️ Now every time I look at it, it’s like a little talisman of hope to get me through. I’m so grateful. 🙌

Always working on my core & stability control. 💪 I love my weight training but I know I would never have gotten this far without #Pilates. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Being so prone to joint pain, injury and bad health having something so flexible meant I could still work out even when I couldn’t get to the gym. 👌 Learning how to control light weights and small movements in a way that still burned helped me see progress when normally I would have plateaued. Then there’s the other end of the spectrum — where it can be damn hard and I walk out feeling sweaty and sore for days. 😂🙌 This was my first time trying this — man I love my studio. 💕 @korpermotus @clancyjs_ @_mel__sue_ •

For YEARS I have struggled to train legs due to joint pain in my knees and ankles 👎 • 
I’ve come up with a lot of really inventive ways to exercise without bearing too much weight on my joints (thanks pilates!) but finally I’ve built up enough strength in those muscles and maintained my own health enough that I can manage some compound lifts without suffering too much. 🙌

Now I never thought I’d say this, but I am loving training legs now? It’s so much more satisfying now that I’m starting to see progress. 👌 But of course I’ll still be dragging my Pilates moves into the gym, always. 😋 I’ve been trying to convert some of my favourite #reformer moves over to the cables with a little bit of success. ☝️😂 What are your favourite leg exercises?
