@juliannalyle started climbing at the age of 7 and began competing shortly after. After years of competing on the national and international circuit, she ticked her two hardest grades outdoors this fall - climbing Prince of Thieves, V11 and Crimp Fest, 5.13b. We are so grateful to have her team up with us to teach a Mental Approach to Projecting clinic, May 5th & 6th at Smith Rock State Park. Meet @katieeebee13: Part 3 “When I was ready, we tackled that route together in the smallest of steps. Place your feet, slide a few inches up, shimmy, reposition your feet. Repeat. Almost there. My goal was to get to the top of the chimney and when we completed that, it was a huge victory. At that point I had a choice- either I could rappel down or I could go for it and attempt to complete the route. Lizzy said it was my choice, but she really wanted to see me try. I felt validated, I felt strong, and I felt scrappy as hell. And I completed that route. I took the intro to rock climbing class that day, but I learned that I am far stronger in body, mind and spirit than I give myself credit for. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the encouragement and compassion from Lizzy, Carey and my fellow lady climbers.”

Meet @katieeebee13, one of the women who attended an intro clinic with us last September:

______________________

Part 2: “Now it was time to face the second part of the route. At this point I was mentally preparing to go up the “chimney” section of the route (you needed to put your butt on one side and your feet on the other and shimmy up the wall). About every cuss word I knew was going through my head and I was working myself into a full on panic. I do not like tight spaces! It makes my skin crawl, it makes me want to scream, it makes me cry and it makes me want to give up. I had pretty much blocked everything out. I was  wallowing in this scared fight or flight state. I didn't want to give up, but I didn't know if it was mentally or physically possible for me to complete the route.
And then I heard someone say my name, telling me that I was doing great. I looked up and there was Lizzy, sitting at the top of the route cheering me on. She recognized that I was scared, was empathetic to that fear and ran around to the top of the route encouraging me to take a breather and reset.”

Meet one of our heroines, @katieeebee13 Part 1 : “When I showed up at Smith Rock that day, I had only been climbing a handful of times and I had never climbed outside. The first couple of routes I completed that day went fairly smooth. I was working through some personal fears: getting comfortable with heights, learning to trust the gear, and realizing that my body was something to be respected for its strength rather than beaten down for its shortcomings. I was stepping out of my comfort zone and I was having so much fun doing it.

When it came time for my last route, I was feeling anxious and excited. This was a route that was slightly higher than my skill level. The first part of the route had very small holds and Carey literally stood below me to point out which holds were best for my feet and which ones would be good for my hands. When I got through that section Carey and the other lady climbers celebrated hard for me.”

The most common hurdles women cite when entering a new sport is intimidation and lack of confidence, inadequate knowledge of gear, and uncertainty in how to plan outdoor outings and cost - @tyrasutak

At She Moves Mountains we strive to create a welcoming environment. Sure our guides are bad ass, but we all know what it’s like to be new at something. At our Intro to Outdoor clinic we break it down to the basics. We provide all of the climbing gear you will need throughout the day. Then we teach you the names of all the gear and how to use it. The rest of the day is spent climbing, learning movement skills, and how to belay.
The best part of this clinic is that EVERYONE is fairly new. So there is no reason to be intimidated. And with a price point of $105 for a full day of instruction, we hope that our clinic is reasonably accessible. If it’s not and you want to attend shoot us a thoughtful email.

And for all of you wanting to know what “knot” that is, it’s actually an alpine girth hitch which we use to teach mock leading, taught to us by our AMGA SPI instructor. It allows our clients to practice leading from the safety of a top rope. And if you don’t want to trust us here is a little knowledge for you https://www.climbing.com/skills/how-to-tie-an-alpine-girth-hitch/ 📷:@loveyerland

Women are under-represented in outdoor climbing. Women of color are nearly non-existent in outdoor climbing.

One individual not only recognized this problem but reached out to work with us to do something about it. The JoJo Scholarship will be a monthly scholarship to provide one space to our Intro to Outdoor Clinic for a woman of color.

It may not be a solution, but it's a step. Please share this post! Encourage friends to apply.

Applications for a spot at our Intro to Outdoor Clinic on Saturday 4/14 are now open! Apply by Sunday at midnight.

This scholarship is being funded by one individual who wishes to remain unnamed. But I want to say thank you for inspiring us. It's one thing to notice an issue, it's another thing to make a sacrifice to do something about it. If anyone is interested in helping us to grow this scholarship to other programs, please contact us at info@shemovesmountains.com

Meet Our Guide, Jenny: What is your favorite style of climbing/favorite clinic to teach?
_______________________

@jabegg - “I freaking love multi pitch climbing. With an understanding of rope management, self-rescue and safety, efficiency in transitions, and leading, you can ascend big walls and climb mountains…how cool is that?! So it’s a no brainer that the multi pitch clinic is my favorite one to teach. I love the idea of how us guides at She Moves Mountains are trying to work ourselves out of a job - creating self-sufficient climbers out of all of our clients so that they no longer need guides or clinics to go climbing. The multi pitch clinic is the epitome of this dream.”

Meet Our Guide, Jenny: Why do you think it's important for women to learn from other women?
_______________________

@jabegg - “So often, women learn to climb from their boyfriends, or under the mentorship of a male friend. For some, this can be a difficult dynamic. I can’t say I completely understand the reasons why, but oftentimes women grow smaller around men, needier, timid. I’ve experienced it myself. And the thing is, when you’re climbing - you need to be as big, as self-sufficient, and as bold as you possibly can be. I suppose this often happens more naturally when women learn from women. It’s my goal that through She Moves Mountains women can see how powerful they really are, and take that knowledge into the rest of their interactions, whether those be with men or women.”
