It’s a good day to be a walrus. The IMO adopted the first official shipping route and Areas to be Avoided through the Bering Strait today. This means large vessels will now have a charted route to follow—and places to avoid, including ecologically sensitive marine habitats. The area hosts one of the world’s major marine migrations such as bowhead and beluga whales, Pacific walruses, and ice seals.

🐢 Happy World Turtle Day! From the tiniest turtle to the biggest whale, ocean wildlife depend on us to take care of the sea. Let's ensure this little loggerhead makes it from shell to shore—and beyond—by improving fishing practices to reduce bycatch and expanding marine protected areas.

Life on Earth depends on its magnificent and complex ocean ecosystems. Unfortunately, only 3% of ocean is fully protected, far short of the 30% scientists say is needed to ensure a healthy marine environment. Today, on the 25th anniversary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, let’s remember what lies beneath. Working to save marine animals and their habitat, we may ultimately save ourselves. .

Case of the Mondays? Here’s a little something to brighten your day: Explorers just returned from a 23-day expedition in the Gulf of Mexico, where they mapped over 8,000 miles of ocean, discovered unknown species, and captured photos and video footage of environments never seen before. The team observed this spiny rockfish at a depth of 1,425 feet. The news was published recently on the science site News Deeply.

It’s Friday, and the weekend is looking pretty bright. Where will you explore this spring? //
Florida’s Everglades National Park offers endless opportunities for adventure, including rare and endangered species, such as manatees, crocodiles, and even panthers (if you’re lucky).

A comeback for humpbacks? Scientists recently reported a “baby boom” of humpback whale calves near Antarctica. This could be a result of additional ice-free days around the Peninsula, which makes feeding on krill easier for humpbacks—and indicates the importance of strong management of krill stock to ensure this important food source remains available. Establishing a no-take marine protected area in the Peninsula would offer additional certainty that the growing krill fishery won’t compete with marine life in the region, including penguins, seals, and humpback whales. The study was published in the Royal Society Open Science on May 1.

Public lands protections in danger: New bills could eliminate hundreds of thousands of acres of Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs), potentially opening them up to development. The West Pioneer WSA, seen here from the sagebrush steppe of the Bighole Valley, is the largest remaining roadless area in southwest Montana. Its protection status could now be in jeopardy. .

Each year, billions of birds wing their way from backyards across North America to Canada’s pristine boreal forest—earning it the nickname of North America’s bird nursery. More than 300 bird species rely on the boreal for nesting or migratory stopover habitat.

Good news: A visionary vote protects 140,000 square miles of sensitive West Coast ocean habitat. The decision was historic in its recognition of methane seeps as crucial fish habitat. The seeps are areas where methane bubbles up from the seafloor, creating deep-sea communities that convert greenhouse gases into calcium carbonate rock, providing places for corals and sponges to anchor and shelter breeding areas for fish.

A “whale highway” in the Southern Ocean provides the perfect opportunity for scientists to capture incredible footage. This shot from Pew marine fellow Regina Eisert is a killer example of whale “spy hopping.” Type C killer whales, the smallest Southern Hemisphere orcas, surface amid coastal pack ice in the Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area off Antarctica. This practice is called “spy hopping” and allows whales to spot potential meals on the ice.

Big news for our biggest fish: Anne the whale shark has logged the longest migration ever recorded for this endangered species—over 12,000 miles across the Pacific. Whale sharks, like the one pictured here, are the largest living species of fish. .

"What is THAT?" The perplexed words of a government scientist hint at the oddity of this deep-sea Gulf of Mexico find. NOAA scientist Mike Vecchione was so surprised by this contorted creature on a dive last month that he referred to it as “the most bizarre squid I’ve ever seen.” Exactly what species of squid will remain a mystery for now. “It's a remarkable observation. I wish I could tell you what it was,” Vecchione said. The scientists were in the Gulf to explore deep-sea habitats. Mission accomplished!

What’s a view worth? A recent study uncovered the value in terms of overall spending related to “quiet” U.S. public lands. Quiet rec is defined as nonmotorized activities, such as hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, and more. On #SmallBusinessWeek, it’s important to recognize that many of the retailers supporting this giant industry are small operations located in the gateway communities where outdoor enthusiasts come to start their adventures.

High five for new wilderness protections! A new bill could expand Arkansas’s Flatside Wilderness Area by more than 2,000 acres. This would provide additional valuable habitat for animals such as black bears, like the cub pictured, wild turkey, and other species.

🐧 Behind the scenes with ecologist/photographer Michelle LaRue: “The rockhopper [penguin] chicks were in that ugly-cute stage, where they are still fluffy and dependent on mom and dad, but big enough to be awkward and probably slightly obnoxious for parents. Their common name is quite apt, as I watched this penguin climb up and hop around on the rocks, probably on its way somewhere … but where, I wasn’t really sure.” .
Though the Southern Ocean is expansive and wildlife is abundant, the food web is relatively simple: All predators, including penguins, depend on krill either directly or indirectly. Protecting krill means protecting penguins, other wildlife, and ultimately the Southern Ocean ecosystem.
