I have always loved birds. I’m not a binoculars and book kind of guy but their busy happiness always lifts my spirits. Photographing birds is another story. It is very difficult and I lack the equipment, patience and skills to be a good bird photographer. I photographed this bird as an antidote to endless oversaturated crappy boring head in the sand sunsets I see if Joburg. This is also Joburg I’m afraid. It is what we have done to our environment for over 100 years as we ripped gold from the ground. Shot on one of the remnants of a very old mine dump. Toxic and ugly. #downtown#birds#socialdocumentary#environment#mining#goldmine#minedump
I decided to take a few photos of the business that is relocating to the old factory I have been photographing. The company is called Woodlam and they make chairs. Beautiful chairs. Since the factory is running until the move begins next week I thought I would photograph the people working in the factory. They were very welcoming and made my day pleasant and interesting. #blackandwhitephoto#blackandwhite#industry#labour#spraypainting
The 94,7 bicycle race in Joburg. I cannot remember how many times I have done this race. It was exciting to join to spectators this morning and just take photos. I can do clearly remember the jittery excitement, intense focus, aggression and pain of riding in the licensed batches. Do I miss it? Not really. #bicycle#bikerace#puppets#downtown#Jozi
The Zulu memorial on the the other side of the river from the Voortrekker memorial at Blood river. I thought it to be a very sad place. Each shield represents a Zulu regiment and unfortunately not even all the names of these regiments have been preserved. People and culture forgotten. #Zulu#zulumonument#monument#memorial#bloodriver#battlefield#shields
An old image but a favourite. I grew up near here. The Blood River battle site. Where acrimony continues between the Voortrekker monument on one side of the river and the Zulu monument on the other. A river that is now a bone dry dusty gouge in the landscape. #monument#wagon#zulu#voortrekker . #lager#battlesight#landscape .
A few years ago I was involved in a social upliftment program. If involved going into informal settlements where I had to document certain processes. This image was made in Diepsloot north of Joburg. A crime ridden place, overcrowded and very short of all amenities such as water, electricity. From the outside an intimidating sprawl of shacks and litter. What struck me most once we entered was how many people were just hanging around, unemployment is very high, and how much care people take to keep their living areas clean and tidy. Not easy to achieve under very tough conditions. Ticking bombs these areas. People with nothing, not even hope, and nothing to lose. We ignore this at out peril. #socialdocumentaryphotography#streetphotography#blackandwhitephoto#kitchen#poverty#povertyisnotacrime#male
Gorgeous clouds over these rock formations. I wonder how people will recognize this location. Its on the border with South Africa. Actually ib the tiny mountain kingdom of Lesotho. A national park called Sethlabathebe. When I was last there access was 4X4 only. camp next to a river. No electricity, shops taps, toilets or anything else for hours and hours. Paradise on earth. #rocks#clouds#stormclouds#lesotho#landscape#landscapephotography#landscapelover
@jakebrink54 photographimng the ruins of ancient Joburg. Sometimes that is how it feels. Like explorers in search of treasue. All we return with is photographs. At the moment is seems Joburg is balanced on a knife edge. Will it come back from the abyss or will it topple into total destruction? Really I have no idea. #streetphotography#freeway#socialdocumentary#blackandwhite
