Do you know why the Colosseum was built? There was a massive man made lake where the Colosseum now stands. Built for the palace of Emperor Nero, the Roman senate issued to remove all traces of the emperor after he committed suicide. It was decided to build an arena where the lake was, to entertain the people and make them focus on fun and forget the hated Nero. Safe to say that Nero was no hero.
.
Now, why is it called the Colosseum? Back when ego-maniac Nero was alive, he ordered a colossal 100 feet bronze statue of himself. The statue is long gone now but the amphitheater (originally named the Flavian) got its name from the colossus of Nero.

Oh Colosseum! You magnificent 1st century beauty you! The inside of this giant amphitheater is as splendid as it is from the out.
.
The colosseum was used for entertainment for nearly 390 years! During this time more than 400,000 people and about 1,000,000 animals died inside the Colosseum.
.
Morbid details aside, it has now become a symbol against capital punishment. Apparently, any time anyone in the world has their sentence of death commuted or they are released, the lights in the night time illumination of the Colosseum change from white to gold. Good job 👏🏼

Nothing to read here. Just another art piece inside the Vatican Museums that I encountered. I have no info on this colossal-black-goblet-thingy decorated in the Pio Clementino Musuem. Looked cool, so I snapped a picture. Wish this info section was more meaningful. Are you even reading this? Yes? Why?

Decorating the Greek Cross Hall in the Vatican Museums is the beautiful mosaic with the bust of Athena.
.
Athena is the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, handicraft, and warfare.
She was regarded as the patron and protectress of various cities across Greece, particularly the city of Athens, from which she most likely received her name.
She is usually shown in art wearing a helmet and holding a spear.
.
It was so difficult to take a decent 📸 with massive tourist groups surrounding the barricades erected near the mosaic all the freaking time!

The Altare della Patria: (Altar of the Fatherland) It is a monument built in honor of Victor Emmanuel, 1st king of a unified Italy and was completed in 1925.
The monument holds the Tomb of an Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame 🔥, built under the statue of goddess Roma after World War I.
.
Fontana di Tirreno⛲️: The fountain is one of the two symmetrically positioned fountains built as a part of the monument Altare della Patria. It represents the Tyrrhenian Sea. The water comes from the crack in the wall and the figure of Tirreno is rising from the lying position with a statue of the she-wolf by his legs.
.
Santa Maria di Loreto: It is a 16th-century church in Rome, central Italy, located near the giant monument, Altare della Patria.

Baldacchino di San Pietro: Bernini’s baldacchino is massive, standing 96 feet tall! The four-poster, solid-bronze canopy over the main altar (baldacchino of St. Peter’s) appears almost dwarfed by the dome towering right above it.
.
So you might think it’s not that tall. But it is! It’s almost 10 stories tall—it’s just that the dome, above it, is even bigger: 452 feet. (The baldacchino, by the way, also uses no less than 100,000 pounds of bronze).
.
It was intended to mark, in a monumental way, the place of Saint Peter's tomb underneath. Under its canopy is the high altar of the basilica. Above it, four twice life size angels stand at the corners.
.
This is Bernini's first work in the basilica. He took nine years to make it, from 1624 to 1633.

But in all seriousness, the sculpture is a depiction of a Dacian aristocrat.

Dacians were an Indo-European people, believed to be the ancestors of Romans.

Dacians were divided into two classes: the aristocracy and the common people. Only the aristocracy had the right to cover their heads, and wore these #smurf - esque, felt hat.

The common people, comprised the rank of the army, peasants and artisans.

Octagonal Court, Vatican: The court was originally called “Cortile delle Statue” or “Statues’ Courtyard”, as it gathered a beautiful collection of ancient sculptures and masterpieces.
.
The current name comes from its unique octagonal form, thanks to Michelangelo Simonetti who transformed it in the 1700’s. A truly exquisite space, it alters drastically depending on the time of day (I was told) owing to the direction of rich Mediterranean sunlight entering the courtyard.
.
Some masterpieces, testament to the love and admiration for the art of sculpture, on view here are: Laocoön, the Belvedere Apollo, the Hermes, the Statue of River God, and Perseus with the head of Medusa.
.
I’ve already put up some of these masterpieces in one of my earlier posts. Do check them out.

The Fontana della Pigna: is a former Roman fountain which now stands in Cortile della Pigna (Pine Cone Courtyard), in Vatican City.
.
The Pigna is almost four meters high, and once spouted water from the top!⛲️
Can you imagine how beautiful it would have looked? 🤤
.
It originally stood near the Pantheon 🏛 next to the Temple of Isis. It was moved in 1608, to its present location.
.
The bronze peacocks stand on the either side of the fountain, completing one glorious sight to behold.
.
Interestingly, the color of this fountain is due to a chemical reaction. Composed of a large bronze pine cone, overtime, it’s color has changed to green. Just like🗽!

In the words of DJ Khaled, “#anotherone”.
.
Statue of River God: In 1513 a large marble statue of a reclining god was found at Rome. The god is a personification of the river Nile shown as a bearded old man stretching out on a base with the back leg raised, the front leg lying on the ground and his left arm resting on a sphinx.
In the left arm he also holds a cornucopia full of fruits and grain, thus symbolising the fertilitiy and abundance bestowed to Egypt through the rivers’ famous annual rising and flooding.

The base of the statue is decorated with lines of flowing water, flora such as reeds and lotus blossoms, fauna including bulls, birds, crocodiles and hippopotami as well as a number of pygmies inside boats.
It is thought that this statue type could have developed in Egypt during the 1st century BC.

📍Vatican City Day 3 (Part 4): Sculptures!
.
Laocoön and His Sons: This statue is considered as one of the most famous ancient sculptures ever since it was excavated in Rome in 1506.
The statue shows the Trojan priest Laocoön and his two sons being attacked by sea serpents.
The legend goes that the Greek gods sent the serpents to kill Laocoön and his sons, when he attempted to expose the ruse of the Trojan Horse by striking it with a spear.
.
River Tiber: This statue, which shows the river god in a traditional reclining pose with a jug on rocks near a stream, dates from the first century.
If you look closely, there is a face inside the jug. No idea what that is!
.
Perseus Triumphant: Perseus, son of Zeus, was a Greek demi god known for slaying monsters.
The statue shows the triumphant Perseus holding the severed head of the Medusa.

The yellow-legged gull is a large seagull found in parts of Europe. I encountered a lot of these gulls in my time in Rome. But it wasn’t until when I was in one of the gardens of Vatican that I got a chance to see them up-close.
.
To my surprise these birds were very well adapted to humans, and roamed among us on feet without fear.
.
Their call is a loud laugh (caught in the video) which is deeper and more nasal than the birds of its kind.

The yellow-legged gull is a large seagull found in parts of Europe. I encountered a lot of these gulls in my time in Rome. But it wasn’t until when I was in one of the gardens of Vatican that I got a chance to see them up-close. . To my surprise these birds were very well adapted to humans, and roamed among us on feet without fear. . Their call is a loud laugh (caught in the video) which is deeper and more nasal than the birds of its kind. . . . . . . #vatican  #rome  #roma  #italia  #italy  #italytrip  #bird  #birds  #birdsofinstagram  #gull  #seagull  #birdwatching  #travels  #travelholic  #traveldiaries  #travel  #travelblogger  #travelphotography  #travelling  #traveller  #igtravel  #igdaily  #instatraveling  #instapic  #birdphotography  #like4like  #indianphotography
The Sphere Within Sphere, (also known as Sfera con Sfera) is a sculpture created by Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro depicting an enormous metal sphere with a cracked surface revealing an intricate interior with another cracked sphere inside.
.
Pomodoro originally created it for the Vatican Church in the 1960s, but later began building them for other organizations and can now be found in many locations all over the world such as New York (US), Dublin (Ireland), Tehran (Iran), Tel Aviv (Israel), to name a few.
.
The artist says that the inner ball represents the Earth and outer ball represents Christianity. The design of the internal layers which look like the gears of a complex machine symbolizes the fragility and complexity of the world.
