Working on the lower petals, painted in a stem as the large peony looked like it was floating. Then had a disaster smearing white paint on my dark background but a cotton bud removal and the fact I had just painted in another layer of background, made it easy to fix but there was panic to start with! Lots more work to do on the quirky petals at the bottom.
Working on the lower petals while I have this work back on the easel. I may keep this area in reflected light. There are some quirky petals and detail in the few small petals at the bottom which I will show more detail once they are finished. I also lightened up the larger lower petal. I'm using my @rosemarybrushes, masters choice which I am loving 🤗
Detail, nearly 6 hours at the easel and I have blocked in the new leaves, painted over the previous background and softened the edges of the leaves where required. I will need to refine the veins, light and details, however this layer will have to be thoroughly dry first. I had put this work aside for a break but now spurred on to completing it as it has a whole new dimension🤗 Swipe for before...
I've put the white peony aside to dry a bit before the next layer and working on a new background for this piece. I've just started to paint in some more leaves and an out of focus bud. I think it's going to all come together when I finish the leaves and paint in a new background to soften up the edges 🤗
Detail..part of a large work... When things don't look right. I wasn't happy with the plain background above the peonies in this piece so I'm drawing in some out of focus leaves and a bud and will be re working the entire background at the top. The peonies are not finished either... Here's hoping 🤔
I was about to varnish this work for the gallery but wasn't happy with the lower part and orchids in the shadow areas so I put her back on the easel yesterday and finished it to my satisfaction today, a few adjustments can make all the difference. She will now dry and be varnished in a few weeks time. I am using archival Gamvar varnish as works can be varnished as soon as the thickest parts are dry enough that they are firm when pressed with a finger nail.
L'amitie (The friendship).Oil on linen 1.2metres x 85cm. This work will hang for sale in @parnellgallery in early to mid May. Please PM Parnellgallery direct if you are interested in this work.
I was about to varnish this work today when I noticed an area that needed some more work. Well if I'm going to do one area, why not glaze some poppy red in a few areas. This is a Norma paint by Schminke. It's the one colour in their range I really like. I find Norma although they are artist quality, they don't seem to have the strength of colour that MHoilpaints do but Poppy Red is one I adore for glazing. This work will now have to go back on the wall to dry after I tweak one more area.
