White Lion in Romantic Landscape (after George Stubbs), 2018
graphite on paper, 20.5 x 26”
... Regram @dbdbdbarrera - A new #drawing for my current series of works “There is a vine that grows on my mouth” .
... Stubbs’ painting from 1763 was an attempt at elevating animal painting to history painting. He became obsessed after a trip to Italy where he saw a marble lion statue and recreated this theme multiple times in his career. My singular white lion merges both the ancient statue and Stubbs predecesor into a new history. Dominance and violence give way to solitude, contemplation, and subservience to the sublime landscape. A bizarre adulterated copy that flickers between reverence and derision.
