In today's society, we have been brainwashed into believing that our DNA is our destiny. I.e. Whatever cards we were dealt from mom and dad is absolute and there is nothing we can do about it..."It's in our genetic makeup." However, this is far from the truth.

According to Dr. Sara Gottfried, author of NYT best seller 'Younger,' "only 10% of disease is determined by our genetics." That means that 90% of disease stems from imbalances in the body due to poor lifestyle choices and stress from our surrounding environment.

The study of how our genes transiently change expression (activation/inactivation) based on our environment is known as epigenetics, and it is one of the hottest topics in biomedical research right now. When we study how our genes are influenced by the food we eat, we call this nutrigenomics.

Think of your genes as a dimming light switch. Our genes can be "turned on," "turned off," "turned down," or "turned up" to either promote homeostasis (balance) in the body or dysfunction and disease progression. However, only the set of DNA you have inherited, also known as your genotype (or blueprint), can transiently change expression. If you don't have that "gene" in your blueprint, you can’t express it.

The set of traits which make up your biochemistry and the way you physically look are known as your phenotype, and those set of traits are determined based on how your DNA interacts with your environment.

Our DNA is constantly receiving information from both our external and internal environment to determine our phenotype. Our body is one example of our internal environment.

Every time we eat food, our DNA is receiving information to change the level of activation of our genes. You can think of your genes as these hypersensitive nutrient sensors that are constantly scanning and processing your environment.

It’s FRI-YAY! Whoop! The week has been a roller coaster! It started off rough, but is ending strong as I’m feeling so much better thanks to some #nadtherapy and hydration from my doctor.

But a total bummer that Madison is home sick today and missing her school fund raiser run. 👎🏻 And Harper is still in bed sleeping at 10:30am! Praying she isn’t getting sick as well. 🙏🏻

It is OK to ask questions about the food you eat, to be particular, familiarize yourself with safe and unsafe ingredients, and set high dietary standards. Modern day groceries stores have more “food-like-products” than actual food, but you get to choose what you put in your body🙌🏼 #frolicandflow

It is sad to realize there are so many toxic ingredients allowed in the beauty and skin care industry. The Environmental Working Group website (ewg.org) is a great resource to research the products used in your home and on your body. I do not believe that all chemicals are bad or that everything natural is good. I believe it’s important we educator ourselves and make informed decisions about the products we expose ourselves and our children to every single day. #knowbetterdobetter

Here are some top offenders: eye cream, face masks, body lotion, lipstick, mascara, shampoo

Many traditional eye and face creams are made with preservatives which can potentially release formaldehyde and wreak havoc on the immune system. •
Traditional facial masks can be formulated with PEGs, which are widely used in cosmetics as thickeners or solvent and can possibly be contaminated with trace amounts of dangerous chemicals. •
With more skin to cover, body lotions offer the most exposure to potentially toxic ingredients, like mineral oil. Permitted in beauty products, mineral oil is a conditioning agent that may be contaminated with trace amounts of toxins and can suffocate skin.

As lipstick is applied on your mouth, it’s no surprise we ingest what we put on, including artificial fragrance. Artificial fragrances can be a blend of ingredients that are not required to be disclosed by U.S. law and can include trace amounts of phthalates (potential endocrine disruptors). •
Carbon black, a pigment used in mascaras to create the deep black color, has been linked to a range of adverse health effects.

Harsh sulfates, such as SLS and SLES, are found in many shampoos and can cause skin irritation.

Let’s get these nasty chemicals out of our homes and push Congress to pass more laws to protect us. •

Sushi! 🍣 This used to be one of my favorite meals...I could eat sushi on the daily and still not get enough!

This week I am in California with my Doctor receiving treatment for a number of issues (more on that later). Yesterday we had a convo on sushi... my days of eating sushi are over. 😭😭😭 Apparently I’m more susceptible to parasites and can no longer eat raw foods. Sad day.

BUT on a positive note, yesterday we began part one of my parasite treatment. It hasn’t been too terrible yet. Hoping it’s smooth sailing and all these suckers get out of my body without a fight! I’ve been living like this for way too long. •
