Finger strength has always been, and likely always will be, an exceptionally difficult struggle for me; but, lately İ'm feeling some growth and slightly less lacking in that aspect. Been challenging myself to take a step back and work on being more well-rounded as a climber. This climb İ did yesterday, "Captain America" (V8) at Black Mountain, which revolves around a trio of thin crimps, is an example of the type of climbing İ typically found particularly difficult. Thanks to @iceeiceebailey for the photo!
Missing the majesty of the eastern sierra backdrop. While recent weather here in greater LA area has brought with it some pretty clouds (as well as some irritating traffic on my morning commutes), it doesn't even come close to filling the void. Also sad to be missing some friends there this weekend, but sooner or later climbing always arranges a reunion. Going to have to get outside again soon before İ go bonkers.
Been doing a lot of training indoors the past month.. Actually, İ don't think İ've been outside in about a month 😢
Just switched from volume climbing to strength/power and on suggestion from session buddy @instagreham İ figured İ ought to work up to doing a muscle up... Then discovered İ could already do them haha.. A little (or a lot) shaky but cut me some slack; it's the second.
Decided to pick the Druid Stones for this weekend's day one. İt'd been a long time since İ last hopped up there for a circuit and figured İ'd go back. Spent a little over half the day exploring further uphill too to see if anything amazing would jump out but alas İ found mostly choss as one would expect. Bishop rock is often pretty chossy once you leave the classics that have been cleaned by decades of consistent traffic. Still enjoyed the short little circuit afterwards and this is still the best boulder up there 👌
Not quite my backyard, but nearly so. İ'd neglected these areas till now so i picked up the new LA County Bouldering guidebook and set out to explore my local crags. The rock is a little sandier than the sandstone in Santa Barbara but there are certainly some quality blocs. İ'd seen pictures of this rad boulder before and it was definitely last night's highlight. Super fun 👌👍
The Holiday Bishop trip has come and gone. İ'm back home now but, as always, it leaves me with a rejuvenated focus. Tomorrow will be the start of training in this new year. Likely will be back soon, but for now it's time to bump that bar up a little higher.
Not at all your typical Bishop winter this year (or even winter for that matter); but while temperatures of up to 22°C certainly aren't helping, İ can only blame so much on conditions. Between my embarrasing performance and the heat, there has been no integral progress made on the "Buttermilker" in the two sessions İ've put in on it this trip. Going to try again tomorrow at night in pursuit of better conditions and hopes of cleaning up my act. Still, failure is part of the process and psyched to be out here with friends from all over that İ haven't seen in months and years.

Psyched to have had some proper cold temps this past weekend (it even snowed a tiiiiny bit at the milks on saturday). With the fires and 28°C weather in SoCal the past week, İ half expected to have lost the winter season here too. Glad that wasn't the case and psyched to go back. Till then İ have quite a bit of skin farming to do! 😅
PSA: So the past couple nights there have been reports of alleged fires in Thousand Oaks. Keep in mind that you have no depth cues when you are looking at a large distant bright object in the dark. This is the eastern end of the Thomas fire on a mountain side just northeast of Fillmore and İ shot this last night from Bardsdale. Much like how the sun always *looks* like it sets "into" the ocean just beyond the horizon or how the moon *appears* to rise from just behind that hill; people saw this blaze at night from Thousand Oaks and, not being able to tell how far away it is, reported it on social media saying there's a fire "behind Home Depot", "at the Civic Arts plaza", or "in Newbury Park". İf you think you see a fire in Thousand Oaks *AT NİGHT*, do just a little bit of investigative work to make sure the fire is where you think it is so you don't cause undue panic. All that said, conditions in the Thousand Oaks area are similarly arid and windy so stay vigilant on the look out because we could very quickly end up in similar danger if fire catches in our hills too. A decade ago the months from November to Feburary were cold and rainy, and now we have a dry December with temperatures in the 70s... İ wonder why?
Lastly, a big thanks to all the firefighters and law enforcement out there on our behalf.
Desideratum: More pinch strength
Tonight İ decided to start adding pinch strength training to the mix. The 60lbs here is all İ can fit on this dumbell without it starting to feel too lopsided so İ'm going to have to find/make a few pinch blocks soon. İdeally İ just wish İ had a heavier version of that #Squamish pinch block. That thing was so comfy in the hand! Does this make me a weightlifter now?? 😜
