Children’s Day #こどもの日 is a Japanese national holiday which takes place annually on May 5th, and it is part of Golden Week Holidays.
The purpose of the Children’s Day is to celebrate children’s happiness and to respect their personalities.
The day was originally called “Tango no Sekku”, #端午の節句 or Boy’s Festival, was celebrated in order to wish the healthy growth of the boys in the family.
On that day, families with boys raise “Koi-nobori”, #こいのぼり or the carp-shaped streamers outside the house, wishing their success in their lives.
We also display ornamental helmets called Kabuto #兜 or samurai dolls #五月人形 at home, because we are believed to be symbols of strength and vitality.
Traditional foods such as “Kashiwa-mochi”, #柏餅 mochi rice cakes wrapped in oak leavesand, and “Chimaki”, #ちまき rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves are eaten on that day.
It is believed that “Kashiwa-mochi” is a symbol of prosperity of our descendants, and that “Chimaki” is a protective charm.

This festival is held every year.
Koinobori is a traditional Japanese event held on May 5th to pray for health and eventual career success for boys.
The wish connected with this event is for children to grow up well, healthy and strong, like carp that swim their way up waterfalls.
