The next animal I’d like to feature on Endangered Species Day is the Chinese Alligator 🐊
It’s one of only two alligator species in the world and unlike its American cousin, it’s critically endangered.
✳️ It’s found only in small pockets of the Yangtze River Basin in China.
✳️ Did you know there are less than 130 individuals left in the wild?
✳️ The main reason why they are disappearing is habitat loss. Their former habitat is being lost to rice paddies.
✳️ There is good news and hope: Many zoos have successfully bred this species and some have even released the offspring back into the wild👍
Me: What do you think is the most expensive infrastructure project in China?
Yoshi: Highway system?
Yoshi: Space program?
Yoshi: This cement wall Im looking at?
Me: Ding Ding ding! That's the Three Gorges Dam, the most powerful dam in the world, costing over 30 billion USD to contruct. It generates almost 90 terrawatts of power.
Yoshi: Is that a lot?
Me: It's about the power of 20 Hoover Dams. The power from the 3 Gorges dwarfs any electrical production in Canada, and us one of the major steps China is taking towards clean energy.
Yoshi: So all around a pretty good deal.
Me: Thats controvesial. The dam flooded several valleys displacing 1 million people.
Yoshi: For china 1 million people is not so bad
Me: How can you say that?? Yoshi: For China, its just a drop in the bucket!
Me: you're really going to end on a pun?
Yoshi: Not good?
Me: Not really
Yoshi: Damn it.
