Had some struggles with my power jointer today where I wasted two 8’ walnut pieces. Spent hours recalibrating the jointer and finally got a nice piece of walnut square to start making the legs for my cabinet! Wasted a day, but learned a lot.
Weird story- I’m working at the shop by myself, very focused on the task at hand, earbuds in listening to a podcast. I notice an incessant car horn going off in the background. My work area is fairly isolated so the sound is unexpected. There is a single wide trailer up a steep bank above the yard area and there’s a guy there mashing on the horn. I assume he’s too lazy to walk the ten feet to the trailer door. I turn around trying to figure out what his problem is. It turns out he’s trying to get my attention. I take my earbuds out. “What’s up?”
He keeps waving at me, “Look behind you!”
I turn to see a medium sized black bear scrambling up the overgrown hill behind my stone piles. The guy shouts down to me, “I was trying to tell you. He was a foot behind you, sniffing your ass!” I’m not sure the moral of the story but I don’t like it when strangers refer to my rear parts as my “ass.” Also, look out for bears.
One of my favorite things in the world is seeing a nest. Being able to watch birds care for their young is amazing. This day I was looking for woodpeckers, just to see maybe one. But instead I got this Nuttall’s woodpecker (Picoides nuttallii) feeding a baby!
