7/7...The intricate version of wall panelling is TRELLIAGE. French in origin, it refers to trelliswork or ornate latticework, that is constructed of strips of wood or metal. The word is thought to have first appeared in the 12th century, when French country gardeners created rudimentary structures, called “treille”, to support the climbing tendrils of vines in their countryside gardens. One of the most famous examples of trelliage is by American decorator, Elsie de Wolfe, with her famous "Trellis Room" at the Colony Club in 1905, New York City’s private club for high society women. Used as an overlay cladding, white on white, white on a pale background colour or white on mirror, the effect is beautiful. Swipe left to view some of my favourite examples of trelliage - from doors, to a ‘treille’ garden pergola & various interior spaces - from the refined and regular through to the ornate.
