The tranquility of small water, holes in the middle of nowhere can’t be compared to much. Places where you have to scoot your gear through small holes followed by squeezing and crawling through thickets on your hands and knees. These places are cherished by the 1% who go the extra mile to find a hidden honey hole amongst endless woods are filled with memories. This hole in particular consists of a mile walk through the Arizona Desert, followed by two river crossings and another half mile through the woods to a pond half the size of a basketball court. This place has produced for us and also left us walking home empty handed. But leaving empty handed is better than work. This particular day was filled with fast shooting and some breakfast consisting of Reese’s and a coffee (hunters breakfast). The days are always better when you have a dog in the blind with you not just to pick up your birds but to keep you company.
Mornings in Obregon Mexico are filled with breakfast burritos, cold beer between groups of decoying birds and extended tubes. Groups of pintails greater than 50 decoy over and over into our spread as we pick out the biggest bulls possible. The size of these pintails are huge compared to the “trophy” size many hunters get in the states. I was able to bring a pintail home that had a 13in sprig for a Wall mount. The color of these birds isn’t comparable to any other place in the world as they hang out in the coastal marshes of Mexico soaking up the warm sun. I did this hunt through Getduck.com (@ramseyrussellgetducks) and it was one of the best hunts of my life. 10+ different species committed to the decoys without calls, feet down crazy action. Your barrel will remain hot all day, so watch you hands.
Chasing the white devils in South Dakota is nothing like they say on the forums or in the magazines. Birds in the hundreds tornado over our 1500+ decoy spread only to be met with extended tubes and hot barrels. The morning were cold and the corn fields were covered in a blanket of snow. The views of the sun coming up and going down from a coffin blind were amazing. Corn fields as far as the eye can see. Hell of a trip but some days are a hit and some days are a miss. Back to the grind.
Slow day in November set up along a river bed on the salt river in Arizona. We heard the sound of wings in the distance. As we readied ourselves for a possible wigeon shootout 18 honkers flew over us landing 100 yards past our spread. This sight in Arizona is rare as these birds aren’t found in the desert zone often. We decided to jump them off this big body of water, to our dismay we got busted sneaking up on them but got lucky enough for a second attempt. They turned 180 degrees and headed back over the desert. This was our chance and we had to run to get into position. As we got into position one lone shot from my A5 took down my first goose. I sent yogi after the surprise kill only to catch up to her 2 minutes later filled with cactus from trying to pull the Canada goose out of a cholla cactus. A day I’ll never forget. 🌵 #waterfowl#sitkagear#cactus#duckdog#duckhuntAZ
Yogis first opening day after 6 long months of training. Hunted upstate Arizona with 8 buddies resulting in an 8 man limit of mostly blue winged teal. The morning before we had about 2500 birds sitting on three ponds so we knew where we needed to be. So the next morning we set up in a flooded timber section waiting for the swarms of blue wings to touch down in our spread. By 8:15 am we had an 8 man limit and a tired dog. Hell of an Arizona Opener. #sitkagear#tanglefree#gundog#waterfowl
December 2017 - From AZ to Mass for a 3 day Sea Duck and Puddle duck shootout. Was an insane trip going from sunny and 87 in Phoenix to 32 and choppy in Boston. Funny thing about this limit was that I somehow forgot to put a choke in my SX3. Ended up limiting in 40 minutes with half a box of shells with the help of @codfather_guideservice . Hell of an experience in an area with an abundant number of B-52 Eiders. Awesome awesome trip. #seaducks#eiders#codfather#Waterfowl#DuckhuntMA
