You hear a lot of people say “Everyone thinks they’re a photographer nowadays” and “The media are all just vultures! They just want the shot and don’t care about you.” When I look at this picture sometimes you have to agree haha!

These guys kept circling us on the trail this morning. Five vultures total camped out on the cliffs. Since this trail is right by my house I’m pretty sure they were the ones on my neighbor’s roof yesterday (see 2nd pic). This is a bad shot and doesn’t show how big they really are. Velociraptors🤣😂🤣 - Size and sound! They were big and noisy! 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳#🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅 #vultures#bonnevilleshorelinetrail#suspensionbridgetrail#wasatch#hikingadventures
Turkey vultures. Part of nature’s clean up crew. I saw a cool wild America moment on the way home from the farm. Had to do a u-turn to go back and get closer. Boots full of snow. Almost slid into the water-logged ditch trying to get close. Two deer hopped across the way while trying to get the kids excited about this super cool scene and that there was no need to keep telling me that you ‘don’t know why we are doing this.’ 😂 The birds kept stretching their wings and looked like they were tired from a long day of carrion duty.
In the Zoroastrian tradition, once a body ceases to live, it can immediately be contaminated by demons and made impure. To prevent this infiltration, Zoroastrians purified the dead body by exposing it to the elements and local fowl on top of flat-topped towers in the desert called dakhmas.
According to a tradition dating back over 3,000 years, bodies were arranged on the towers in three concentric circles. Men were placed in the outer circle, women in the middle, and children in the inner-most ring. Bodies were then left until their bones were bleached by the elements and stripped by the vultures.
Since the 1970s, the use of dakhmas has been illegal in Iran, forcing orthodox Zoroastrian’s to adapt to new burial methods.
