Still thinking about one of the great works of art in Hip Hop, DAMN by Kendrick Lamar, receiving the Pulitzer Prize.
The way we listen to music is often in sporadic clips (often as short as 15 seconds on an IG story or Snap) distracted as we multi-task or get lost in the scroll.
I listened to a couple of interviews some time last year about the intricacies of how this album was made; from 9th Wonder talking about how a handful of his beats were fused into one song (DUCKWORTH) to Kendrick sharing how a single song on the album would be comprised of the strongest pieces of multiple songs that he recorded.
Something made with that level of care, detail and artistic excellence is made to be (and best enjoyed) with full attention and your senses all present.
Give yourself the gift of the experience of listening to a work like this, start to finish.
A piece of his poetry from PRIDE:
Now, in a perfect world, I probably won't be insensitive
Cold as December but never remember what Winter did
I wouldn't blame you for mistakes I made or the bed I laid
Seems like I point the finger just to make a point nowadays
Smiles and cold stares, the temperature goes there
Indigenous disposition, feel like we belong here
I know the walls, they can listen, I wish they could talk back
The hurt becomes repetition, the love almost lost that
Sick venom in men and women overcome with pride
A perfect world is never perfect, only filled with lies
Promises are broken and more resentment come alive
Race barriers make inferior you and I
See, in a perfect world, I'll choose faith over riches
I'll choose work over bitches, I'll make schools out of prison
I'll take all the religions and put 'em all in one service
Just to tell 'em we ain't shit, but He's been perfect, world
A walk through Scarborough Town Centre, a place that flickers with memories that span he majority of my life, and the sun on its’ descent for the day brought a feeling that was soft and subtle, closest fit would be joy with the volume turned quite low. A feeling described so well in this passage from Zadie Smith: “It might be useful to distinguish between pleasure and joy. But maybe everybody does this very easily, all the time, and only I am confused. A lot of people seem to feel that joy is only the most intense version of pleasure, arrived at by the same road—you simply have to go a little further down the track. That has not been my experience." From a Zadie Smith essay titled, "Joy"
There is a common myth that is being widespread that goes something like this...”just do more” “work harder” “take more action” and your goals and dreams will come true. Have you heard that before??
From my experience, that is complete and total bullshit 😜 pardon my French but it is one of the most harmful things we can say to someone.
Action is important but the truth is, action without belief is devastating and can leave someone feeling completely helpless.
What I’ve seen from experience is EFFECTIVE ACTION is really the key.
In the book, the science of getting rich, it talks about learning how to hold onto the feeling place of ALREADY HAVING or ALREADY BEING that which you are creating and taking action from that feeling place!!!! This is huge!!!
If I’m operating from a place of inadequacy or feeling incapable, what type of fruits will I reap?
The law of cause and effect states that we are the cause of whatever it is that is happening in our lives. If we are operating from fear and doubt, we will continuously reap fear and doubt. We cannot sow apple seeds and except to reap mango trees. I can keep throwing more and more apples seeds to the ground and keep hoping for mangos, but I will continually get more and more apples trees.
This is what happens when we solely focus on doing more. We will reap more! But what if we don’t want more of what we are getting?
Start by sowing new seeds!! Take a minute and align yourself with your vision. Instead of operating from a place of having to get to, operate from a place of already having! Already being! From a place of victory! And then work from there!!! You will be surprised to see that it’s never been “hard work” but more so WORKING EFFECTIVELY to produce the results we desire!
Type Amen if you have a God fearing & worshipping type of man? There is nothing more sexy and reassuring about a man in worship. Just witnessing him in full communication with God gives off a sense of security. 🙌🏽 Congrats to this Power Couple on their engagement.
The Fist by Derek Walcott
The fist clenched round my heart
loosens a little, and I gasp
brightness; but it tightens
again. When have I ever not loved
the pain of love? But this has moved
past love to mania. This has the strong
clench of the madman, this is
gripping the ledge of unreason, before
plunging howling into the abyss.
Hold hard then, heart. This way at least you live.
Words can’t describe how excited I am for the opportunity to be a part of this. I could not have gotten to this point without the support of family and friends.
Very thankful for the great leaders and mentors @thenatechambers and @roarkjames_ for their guidance thus far and their teaching and leadership going forward.
This always has and always will be about the members and the opportunity to help individuals find the best versions of themselves. I’m excited to get to know the future members of Roark Gyms SoMa.
“The one who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The one who walks alone is likely to find themselves in places no one has ever been.”
The truth 💯💯
This is the philosophy of Elbert Einstein that I find very valid for my character.
Little fact about me: after high school, when everyone was going to study to the USA or Europe or in Bishkek, I decided to come to Hong Kong and have my own path. I knew nobody here and knew nothing about HK.
But I figured the way out. And overcame all adversity.
And that’s what I believe in: you can figure out anything in life.
The key is to not be afraid to walk alone. To have your own path. And along that path, you will find your followers and peers.
Right now I’m at the point of figuring out which path to take after college. I’m hustling. I’m listening to options. I will keep you posted.
“Young people, it’s wonderful to be young! Enjoy every minute of it. Do everything you want to do; take it all in. But remember that you must give an account to God for everything you do. So refuse to worry, and keep your body healthy. But remember that youth, with a whole life before you, is meaningless.”
Ecclesiastes 11:9-10 NLT
Enjoy your life to the fullest , do what your heart desires, but make sure it reflects the ways of GOD. Make sure it shines light make sure it glorifies GOD. Inspire others, fulfill your purpose, Man I can go on for days.. I love utilizing the gift GOD has given me to do exactly what I said, to inspire, uplift, to shine light and give GOD glory. Like I really enjoy it as you can see. Gotta get the crowd involved all the time!
