Amazing horizontal blind tasting of 9 wines 🍷from Valtellina, vintage 2014 yesterday night at @jombartresivio (organised by the ONAV Sondrio)!
2014 was a difficult vintage in Northern/Central Italy 🇮🇹. The excessive rainfall ☔️from June to September made the grapes 🍇 swell which resulted in a lesser concentration of aromas/colour/tannins. The cloudy ⛅️ days reduced the photosynthetic activity of the vines and it resulted in a lower amount of sugars in the grapes and aromas of fresh (almost unripe) fruits.
The bias of this tasting are the corks chosen by the producers which were different and can impact the maturation in bottle (please see my blind tasting with ARPEPE) and the conditions of maturation (temperature, humidity, darkness, calm) because those bottles were on the market.
The wines were all interesting and good. Some expressed a fruity character, others a mineral/smoked character. I could not make the link between those two characters and the sub zones. They globally had flavours of fresh red cherry 🍒 and plum, with medium + to high acidity, medium + to high tannins, medium body and a wide range of flavours’ intensity.
On my opinion, the most complex wine 🍷 was the sample 4 which was the “Essenza” (Valtellina Superiore DOCG) made by @tenutascerscevaltellina 👏👏👏. The flavours of fruits (red cherry, plum) had evolved to cooked fruits with a hint of butterscotch and wood. This wine was developing with high tannins level, high acidity level, medium body and medium intensity of flavours. The level of tannins and acidity would suggest to keep the wine for ageing but the intensity of flavours is not high enough. The winemaker is really gifted and worked perfectly but the wine is limited because of its the vintage. This an excellent example of the effect of a bad weather on the wine 🍷
I was honoured to have the opportunity to participate to this tasting. I hope you enjoyed my comments. Cheers!!
