What happened to people actually walking with their own two feet? Or cities investing in a proper metro system and bike infrastructure? Every kid age 2 to teenage years seems to be on a scooter and now adults on motorized scooters thanks to tech cos. thinking they’re solving the world’s problems only to create new ones instead. Skateboards are one thing, I appreciate the whole culture around it. But what’s the culture around scooters other than laziness or jumping on the latest tech craze? Soon we’re going to be a nation of peg legs mowing down anyone and anything in our way. (Maybe we already are.) I do have some bias here given my dog is deathly afraid of the damn things, but I don’t blame him, everyone barreling toward us on morning walks. Not to mention seeing them be a real hazard for the elderly or handicapped.
In Europe life on foot, bike, and train seemed so sensible and simple. I miss those days. Tech innovation is good, but so is first prioritizing the time-honored basics of urban mobility and developing tech to solve actual problems. And saying no, little one, you’ve learned how to walk for a reason. Now walk to school already!
