Sometimes you just can't band a family of burrowing owls... because they're too busy sitting high in a tree. 🤔😂 Not a bad idea on their part, though! This fledgling lives at a baseball park, and probably finds this tree to be a little quieter than the burrow it hatched in.
Another tour of Legacy Nature Preserve for the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival in the books!! Super fun group; saw or heard 60 species! One highlight was the fuzzy baby red-tail hawk. And the flock of floating pelicans. And the bossy, fighting western kingbirds. And the uber-orange Bullock’s orioles. And the acrobatic Forster’s terns. 🖤
@bryantparknyc strikes again! On my twice-weekly Bryant Park bird walk tonight, we found a rare Mourning Warbler (Geothlypis philadelphia), the first I’ve ever seen in the park! This is usually a skulking bird of deep woodlands, but this one stopped by the park on migration and was just hopping through a hedgerow, eating bugs mere feet from rushing crowds on 6th Ave, in the heart of midtown. I took this photo with my iPhone, no magnification. It’s not even cropped! Awesome bird.
