After all my talk on this city and this monument and cathedral, I’m surprised I never made a post on it here. This Cathedral has a storied and varied past. The Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood is so named because it was built on the site of the assassination of the Tsar Liberator, Alexander II. Much to my surprise, it was a private family church to the Romanovs, instead of public to allow the citizenry to pay tribute to the murdered Emperor. After the fall of the dynasty, the church stood abandoned and then became a theater storage for equipment, later would serve as a farmers market; during WW2 and the Siege of Leningrad it would serve as a morgue and be abandoned once again until the 1980s when a roof inspector went to retrieve his jacket which had fell into a hole and the inspector found his jacket had landed inches away from an unexploded Nazi gun shell lodged in the roof. Efforts were then made to start its restoration which continues to this day.
As a church, a shrine is built over the actual spot and cobblestones where the Emperor was standing when murdered; it contains the world’s largest collection of ceramic mosaics; and is the only place in the Orthodox Christian world that you’ll find a depiction of Christ’s Resurrection, as it is forbidden to depict something that wasn’t witnessed. It also contains a depiction of Christ as a 12 year old boy within one of the domes, instead of the usual depictions you’ll find as an infant or 32 year old man.
Loved seeing this Cathedral and learning about it beyond the documentary blurb on it.

Cagnes-sur-Mer made me feel like traveling back in time. Nowadays it‘s especially famous for its horse races but in the past it used to be the home of the well-known painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir as well as of the Grimaldi family. The 14th century château crowning the old village bears witness to this time.
