Jugs or pitchers in the shape of human figures dates back to England in the 1700s. These drinking vessels became popular and referred to as Toby Jugs. It is said that they received this name after a song about a character known as “Toby Philpot” which was popular in 1761. Specifically a ‘Toby Jug’ is a beer jug or mug in the form of a stout old man wearing a three-cornered hat.
The Royal Doulton Lion and Crown trademark was used on Toby jugs made between 1919-1925, and the company became quite famous for their character mugs, even today. For a while the mugs were made out of fine china rather than earthware.
Last year through Canada, I started seeing them among other antiques. As with everything else if value, markings are everything and I will fully admit I am oblivious what means what. However, I wanted to share the initial Englishman that initially made me pause and take notice.
I wondered, do you drink out of these mugs because this is how you feel or do you drink out of these cups out of acceptance of how you’ll end up. Hell, I don’t see why it can’t be BOTH! 😆
Who wouldn't want to drink in FDR's magnificent brain? You can't use these, though, as they are collection material from @nul_special_collections. These Toby mugs with Roosevelt's likeness are just a small part of the Unger Collection that is FULL of FDR ephemera and collectibles. We're continuing the large housing project for the busts, clocks, car decals, and -today's focus - crockery. Plates, glasses, and various mugs. Toby jugs/mugs are a big deal (but not a New Deal) dating back to the mid-17th century. Also appropriate on today's #pearlharbor bombing anniversary, since FDR was president.
Found these while cleaning and couldnt help but laugh when I saw them.
Hubby: Ummm, Did you just buy that creepy jug?
Hubby: Omg I dont know you.. everyone is starring at you like your nuts, not to mention we are the youngest people here by 50 years!
Me: and? I'll make money on this! You'll see!
Well maybe 5 years later... I just found it lol!
Pretty sure many people started reselling and/or ebay with antiques!! #memories#antique#royaldoulton#tobymugs#ebay#ebaybusiness#auction#funny#cleaning#hustle
