Breaking Food Routines
Is there anything wrong with eating the same food every day?
I definitely have a breakfast food routine. I’ve been having exactly the same toast & topping combos most mornings for years! Every now and then, I decide to challenge myself to have something different. One morning recently, I swapped my usual toast for oatmeal which was warm, nourishing and a great start to a cool Autumn morning. It didn’t seem to be quite as satisfying as my usual toast, but I knew I could have some a little later in the day if I still feel like it. It wasn’t too long though before I’d completely forgotten about what I had or hadn’t had for breakfast!
The thing to note here is the ability to move on after a change in food routine. If you have a food routine that becomes a non-negotiable eg “I can only eat _______ at ______ time of day”, and changes to that routine cause distress, there is more to it than simply missing out on your favourite foods.
Food routines that don’t serve you well are those established because they feel safe. They are often based on fears held around the effect of food on weight or health, which can become unhelpful and cause anxiety.
If changes in your food routine cause distress, the CFIH team of psychologists, dietitians and nutritionists can help you overcome the fears or worries behind these feelings and establish a more flexible relationship with food.
