We had the most wonderful day at Sacred Glow’s 300-hour teacher training. First @leucasloves joined us to discuss LGBTQ competencies and trans visibility. Then @jovannarama and @travelingisthenewblack came to talk about the experience of being a yogi of color. These conversations are incredibly important and often left out of yoga spaces. Okay, it’s here! My first ever “how-to” video! Thank you guys for being so receptive to the, vote? I guess you could call it...? Anyway, I tried to break these steps down as best I could (below)- these videos will def. get better I promise!
PS the headstand vote was so close, I may just throw that video your way as well...
1️⃣ Prepare your spine. Cat/cows are always good for flexing and extending the spine. They help to warm it up.
2️⃣ Once you’ve finished a few rounds, walk back to a forearm plank and then up into a dolphin pose. To find the right distance for your arms, fold your hands to your elbows. If both sides reach comfortably, you’ve found a good space. Place them onto the ground. I like to “tuck” my forearms into the ground so they don’t slide out when I go into the pose. Make sure you are pushing your shoulders back and AWAY from your body, so that you aren’t sinking into your shoulder blades. Stay here for a few breaths.
3️⃣ Walk your feet closer to your forearms, aiming to align your hips over your shoulders. Remember, don’t sink in to those shoulders! If this is where you stay, stay.
4️⃣ Kick up! Make sure you are breathing (as always) and try not bending into your back, unless the shape calls for it. (I have a tendency to go into a hollow-back and need to work on straightening out.) Tighten your core and find the balance between both the front and back sides of the body. You want to push yourself away from the ground. Shoulders are away from the body, stacked over your elbows. You should feel light and strong, all at the same time. Flex toes, wobble away.
5️⃣ When you’ve had enough, bring each leg to the ground. Lay back in a child’s pose and breathe.
6️⃣ Have fun!!! .
