Here's my question,
'What do you think about taboos in our society? Be it sex, menstruation, masturbation, men rape, homosexuality and the LGBTQ community, nude photography etcetera. How do you think we can eradicate these taboos?'
Pitch: Superficially, a story of a pedophile who charms everyone, even - at times - the reader; on a deeper level, a fairy-tale, detective-story, spaghetti-western and giant chess match interwoven with mastership rivaled only by Joyce.
Review: To write a masterpiece is an amazing feat; to craft a story densely inter-threaded by such varying genres is an even more amazing feat; to do such amazing things in your THIRD language is nearly unheard of. Vladimir Nabokov - a native Russian speaker who studied French and later mastered English - flexes his erudition through the iconically taboo postmodern novel, Lolita. The novel’s gasp-worthiness in the 50s has anything but died down in 2018, considering the proliferant news of sexual misconduct in schools, politics, and corporations. Despite the text’s infinite depth and uncomfortable subject, it remains intensely readable. Humbert Humbert, our handsome protagonist, brings us across 1940s America through a thrilling journey of obsession, deception, kidnapping, loss, and searching - all for the love of a 12-year-old girl. What shocks readers most, perhaps, is that Humbert’s charm is so sinister that - at opportune times - we accidentally pity him. Whether we reel back in disgust, worry for his sanity, or just wish him to be cured of his obsession, Lolita is a novel that one cannot put down.
Favorite quote: Despite our tiffs, despite her nastiness, despite all the fuss and faces she made, and the vulgarity, and the danger, and the horrible hopelessness of it all, I still dwelled deep in my elected paradise - a paradise whose skies were the color of hell-flames - but still a paradise.
If you liked this, read: ‘Laughter in the Dark’ by Vladimir Nabokov (for a similar tale of a pitiful man obsessing over a minor). #VladimirNabokov#Nabokov#Lolita#postmodern#taboo#Intertext#master#literature#stories#books#bookreviews#bookRecommendations#bookrecs#quotes#bookquotes#beautiful#reading#writing
Full post in our bio👈 "When I was 14, my girl friends slowly stopped hanging out with me, and at some point I called one of them and asked her directly what was going on, and she said "Look, my mom and all the moms heard that you're making out with boys all around the compound and she thinks you're a slut and doesn't want me to hang out with you anymore." I had never even kissed a boy before."
