African Americans are 20% more likely to report chronic psychological distress than white Americans. Much of this disproportion is due to the racial micro-aggressions African Americans face daily. These micro-aggressions have become a part of daily conversation within the US, and mainstream media has illuminated the presence of police brutality, gendered racism against Black Women, and institutional oppression. This our reality, these our truths, and the plight of our world. Resilience and strength are characteristics of a people that have had no other option. Our communities have been silenced and forced to endure the generational injustices. Mental Health affects our physical, psychological and social well being from birth throughout our life, and has been an issue our our communities have neglected. While many are unaware of exactly what mental health is, others choose to ignore it due to stigmas, shame, and distrust. This is why BLACK . THERAPISTS. MATTER. We must create [Brave Spaces] that encourage our communities to address their experiences, break the silence, and most importantly BREAK the cycle! Mental Health Awareness month begins May 1. I encourage you to fight the stigma, offer support, and educate yourself. The change starts with us!
