Spinal Frontier. We played with spinal mobility this week in my group classes. Here are two options in sphynx pose. Reach one arm forward at a time without shifting your weight to the side and without lowering the chest. Then experiment with sliding both hands forward and back on a blanket. . . .

Knee stretch. 
I love knee stretch.  Just going with the flow of the movement and the breath. Don't hold on just let the body open and  move.  Opening up the front of the body. Stretching through the quads and coming into extension of the spine.

Having some fun today working on my #pullups and also found a great way to eccentrically lengthen the #quads #abs and #lats 🔑 control your speed into the stretch and make sure your spacing on the table is correct before you & the #physioball go flying off one end😳😁. Avoid using the upper traps. Make sure to use the core and glutes as your legs extend behind you while you lower  from the pullup into swan position. ⚠️ The quad stretch might be too intense. Avoid that part if you have current knee pain or swelling. .

joint movement: axial extension - taking some natural curves out in a halfway lift. while you might feel longer, you will have very little if any movement. not necessarily a place you want to spend a lot of time in since we were created with curves in our spine for a reason. regardless, extremely interesting to play with the many different shapes we have at our disposal in this amazing “thing” we practice 💙

✨How you move in and out of a posture is more important than how deep or far you can go✨ 
This asana definitely has 👽 vibes🖖. I’ve finally learned how to avoid compressing my lower back aka moving mindfully and having proper alignment awareness (🎉!). While back bending, I always remind myself to lift and open my chest by pressing the shoulder blades into the back torso. I’ve been able to get deeper into my backbends because I’m no longer dumping weight into my lower back, there’s more space, and it feels sooo much better. Engaging the core, pressing the hips forward, and lifting the heart center up and open allows you to lower down safely.

Hanging out at another face to face weekend of my #pilates clinical diploma course. I think this move is called #bridge or surfer. I didn’t quite do it perfectly and should have kept my knees bent more on the way up. Either way I was super happy with myself (obvious from my #goofysmile) as I didn’t think I’d be able to do it at all. The #spinalextension in the middle felt super nice aswell. .

Extension montage from today's #classicalreformer workout. --- I have been working really consistently and deliberately on regaining my deep core strength and full spinal extension, especially gaining strength and confidence to extend into my lower back, after having my second baby. And I felt just ecstatic today! I feel stronger and more bold in my extension than even before having babies. Sometimes setbacks, injuries, breaks can be so good for us because we return with more focus, clarity and a mission.  Here are a few key skills and techniques I'd recommend to strengthen/regain spinal extension: 1️⃣ hone in on your deepest core muscles (transversus and pelvic floor) by seriously getting to the bottom of your exhale and squeezing the lowest, deepest muscles first and thoroughly in EVERY SINGLE EXERCISE 2️⃣ first develop clear and strong shoulder flexion, thoracic extension, and hip extension but then you must allow it (unless there's contraindications) to begin to sequence into your lumber/low back extension. If you resist it, you will get tighter and your extension will get weird/thwarted up and down the line. Let it follow through. But that feeling of length and space that rebounds up out of a rooted lower body into the breathing space and soaring lightness that can be extension is a bit more ethereal. Coaxing students into both the physical outward shape of extension and the calm needed to root and expand is tricky! Here is a little sequence I like to help find that length, space and strength. (in my heart of hearts I think of it as my quest to “un-Mitch Mcconnell” the country by lengthening spines and opening hearts) As a cyclist the moves in this sequence helps me open my front body, activate my low shoulders and find length, space and strength in the back. All good things for the curled in strength that accompanies biking! 🚴‍♀️ the first move is to invite your shoulders to the party. The Work happens in the back of the shoulders. Squeeze your upper arms into sides as you exhale the thumbs away from each other. This is also a place to lift your legs all the way up into your belly as you draw the navel in and hug the ball. That will stabilize you and open the front of your hips and set you up for all the other exercises, which are really just the First one in different relationships to gravity. 🚴‍♀️in every shape you are lengthening the back of the ribs away from the hips and narrowing the waist as the collarbones open to give soft lift to the chest. 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️ remember it is a journey not a search for perfection to rest in. Swan dive with the foam roller is one of my favorite modifications for this exercise. The roller is assistive in that it helps people figure out where the movement comes from. Lifting up into extension verses pressing up. It’s also a nice place to do prone scapula isolation to get into the lower traps.
