Kettlebell psoas march
- Anterior chain motor control
This is a progression of the deadbug, SOME of the reasons I use this movement. -It addresses same side hip flexion and opposite side hip extension concurrently, while the band around the feet is adding resistance in flexion & extension, due to maintaining hip stance width of band with feet it will also aid in hip rotational control + lateral chain(like a crab walk) - Note the knee is above 90 degrees flexion where my psoas muscle is performs the major hip flexion role.
The psoas is not just a short, tight & strong muscle. It tends to lack various expressions of motor control- training movements that require psoas strength, extensibility and fine motor control is important. This muscle is a big lumbar stabiliser, but also takes up a big portion of the abdominal cavity. It is easily as important as the glutes for running mechanics or bipedal movement. - Hip extensor activity is from flexed position, due to it being performed in combination with proper anterior chain control it will aid with carry over to vertical force down into ground during sprinting, jumping or field based sports and also optimal gluteal involvement during a squat or deadlift(many more). In optimal running mechanics you do not require much more that 10-20 degrees of ext WITH a neutral pelvis. If you cannot control this in a controlled movement such as this, you may be having some energy/force leaks- distal structures will take on load proximal structures are not. -KB above head adds load/external feedback to the lats for thoracic extension, but also the abdominals to keep ribcage down while maintaining a neutral spine- not rounding upper or lower back. The trunk is resisting lumbar extension. - Having load in the hands and also the feet enables the trunk to be able to maintain stability while reacting to changes in load requirements when legs are performing flexion and extension concurrently while the trunk is resisting extension from load above; this helps create connect between limbs with complex movements requiring sync of the arms and legs at the same time, most complex motor patterns require this.
Many more progressions!
