One more from Alva aka Thunderball’s birthday, we thought blowing up some balloons would cheer her up but this is the stoneface we got. Happy happy joy joy 🎈
As I was getting Hazel in her chair for dinner, she looked at me and said "i-i" (I love you). I said "I love you too, Hazel", and then she leaned in and gave me a kiss. And my heart exploded 💗
S L E E P • Adaline, preparing you to sleep always makes me anxious. I wonder if and when that will change. Tonight, you really tried to delay bedtime. You told #MrLess (daddy) that you were hungry but instead of eating your toast you turned on the stereo and said, “Time to dance.” After indulging you, because I can’t say no to those eyes, we headed to your room. You said “chair?” So we rocked for a bit and I noticed how wonderfully you now fit in my arms. Your little head is at my chin now. Your legs lay effortlessly across my lap. Your arms draped across my torso. Our hearts touching. I love you. • • • • •

Believe it or not, gardening is not something I was always good at! But truly it is something I have always loved!
.
I remember our backyard garden from my childhood as a place of frustration and longing... longing for my strawberries to grow (even when I hadn't watered them well or given them enough room to spread via runners I knew nothing about)... cursing my brother for his pumpkins taking over our garden patch (when none of us knew how pumpkins can kick off a growing season with powerful early growth and quickly monopolize a garden space, which is why they deserve giant farm patches all to themselves)... overwatering all our windowsill plants which loved dry, rocky soils and couldn't survive my drowning them...
.
The world of successful, fruitful gardening seemed unattainable. I didn't know how on earth to turn my black thumb into a green thumb.
.
I didn’t imagine then that I would go on to study Geology and Biology... a powerful combination that fuels the passion and in-depth knowledge that helps me create ideal growing environments and care for my beloved plants! I couldn't know that I would go on to teach at nature centers on the growth habits, maintenance, and care for native plants that benefit the world around us... much less that I would one day become Director of Agricultural Education at a farm and eventually a Playschool Director!
.
Your story is not written yet, no matter how old you are. If you are afraid of gardening because you've never tried, or perhaps because you've tried and failed before, I and my thriving garden are living proof that there is hope. And what a beautiful, blooming hope it is!

This afternoon we did a bit of gross motor reinforcement of the letter T. We hopped, pretended it was a balance beam, and jumped over it. Kai was enchanted with the idea of a T bigger than she is. After some more unstructured outside play, we came inside and watched the Mr. Roger’s episode about making paper and talked about why we should recycle paper. #grossmotoractivity
Erin from @thehumbledhomemaker is joining me on the podcast this week. We are chatting all things simplifying meal planning and grocery shopping. Take a listen, the link is in profile.

Today in the damp, chilled post-rain of Dayton, OH, we put our Littlest Gardener guide to good use. I was hopeful that the prompts included in our Scavenger Hunt Activity Sheet, combined with the unique weather today, would help bring new life to our time on a trail we travel frequently!
.
When challenged to find "Something I've Never Seen Before," this little lady wandered a bit before crouching down at the trailside and began the most gentle, focused observation, not to be distracted even by a babbling brother toddling all around her as she studied her Wild Garlic discovery.
.
We paused to feel the smooth texture pulling our fingers gently along the grass-like foliage. We chose a long strand to pull and observe the round, hollow inside that differentiates this plant from its look-alike and smell-alike, Wild Onion. 🌱
.
We smelled it, tasted it, and began searching the whole trail as she shouted out in delight, "More! I see more Garlic!" and in adorable toddler fashion, started handing out samples to dog-walkers and runners on the trail. ☺️
.
We sit at home now, enjoying a snack together hours later as the faint smell of garlic still comes up from my fingertips. I can't help but smile at the thought of our morning studies and wonder what adventures you all may be having with your littles and your guides in tow.
.
I can't wait to hear about your adventures, dear friends! If you haven't grabbed your Littlest Gardener At-Home Guide, don't wait another moment! Just a few days left in our Earth Day 50% off sale and opportunity to add a bonus FREE companion Garden Design guide to your cart! 🌿
Man ir veicies, ka no mazotnes man vecāki ir iemācījuši daudz dzert ūdeni.
Our goal today was to work on scissor skills. The plan was to cut flowers for flower arranging and paper leaves for our uppercase/lowercase activity. As you can see, the leaves didn’t survive the joy of Kai having scissors (another reason I love @habitatschoolhouse’s pdf based curriculum: something goes wrong you can always print it again!)
.
She did a great job cutting flowers and putting them in our mason jar vase. We took the extras outside for a fun addition to our free play. If you swipe right you can see Kai floating and then “planting” her flowers. #habitatschoolhouse#brandrep
Seed investigation week— learning about germination, parts of the seed, and the difference between monocots and dicots. Of course while counting flower pedals and investigating plant leaves at the botanical gardens Oisin would find the one daffodil (monocot) with 7 petals?!. Kid, you somehow always know how to challenge patterns and ask questions...
Kai was looking unhappy in the tub, so I asked her what was wrong. “Mommy, me frustrated.” “Why,” I asked. “You me toys gone!”
.
I had put her tub toys up to clean and hadn’t gotten them back out. So I went and gave them to her and there were no tears or tantrums, just a thank you. .
.
I am still a little giddy with shock. All this parenting I do might actually be working. What were your mom win moments this week? #momwin
Slow Mornings -
Who puts a bin in a car parking space? The eerrr Queen! Her palace, her carpark, her garden. I can't be the only person who's reversed into this camouflaged beast.

Next stop Scottish Parliament which is alight with Palestinian supporters (forever outside never inside) and active Granny's from Glasgow (in the public chamber). I'm excited at the world of possibilities for these two but equally disgusted by the stale lack of real progress. .
I've been insta-lite lately, trying to get my house in order, to a point where I can let it go for a year and focus on me, be fully present for the kids, in a healthy state. We've a whole summer together - without nursery - cutting about, ripping it up, starting again. Can't wait.

My four-year-old frequently asks me to tell him the story of how he was born. It starts back 15 years ago, when a girl met a boy and fell in love (not love at first sight, but love at second sight). They took exciting adventures around the world, until one day they decided to begin their biggest/scariest adventure of all—starting a family. Today I am celebrating 8 years of marriage to this guy. “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” I am happy to report that everyday feels like a daring adventure. ❤️❤️
Our bodies are covered in vitamin D receptors - they exist even in places where “the sun don’t shine”. Sunbeams are sustenance, food and medicine for the skin and every cell in the body 🌞 This wild child knows intuitively that sun is the best remedy. #herbalist#childhoodunplugged#freerangekids#slowparenting#pnwonderland
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE...How many times can I say that I ❤️ this new book so much? I found it on display at @interabangbooks.👌 If you have a dreamy, imaginative child you can help them shine by listening to their stories.
📝
“If I had nothing, but still my mind..There’d always be stories to seek and to find.”
📝
“What If...” by @samanthaberger321 and @mike_curato can be used as a creative way to introduce story writing with your kids. You might even use it as a writing prompt.
📝
Particularly, for the kids that struggle to put their ideas on paper – let’s remind them that everyone has a story living inside them and it needs to be told. We can help them tell their story and find other ways to write it down. I promise it isn’t cheating if you let them tell the story and write it for them every now and then. ✨✨✨
Today after Gideon woke up from his nap, I met him in the hallway and gave him a hug. I was leaning over in kind of a half squat position and just sat there hugging him. Usually I give him a quick hug and we’re off to the next thing on the to-do list but today I decided that I wouldn’t be the first to let go. My legs started hurting from the awkward position but I didn’t let go. It took a good 10 min for him to decide it was time and he headed off to pick up a book from the shelf for a little more snuggle & reading time. It’s these little moments that make me so appreciate this time at home with my littles. I want it all to slow down and that hug made it feel like time was standing still ❤️ #slowdown#hug#breathe#mylittleman#ohgiddy#slowparenting#naptime#sweetmoment#littlethings#spottedattheranch#boymom
