My 30-day “Sleep Cure” challenge is almost complete. I introduced this challenge at the beginning of February on the "Thoughts on the Good Life" blog:
I’ve been dutifully sleeping for at least 8 hours per weeknight and 9 hours per weekend night. Overall, it has been blissful.
This month, I’ve been logging the most hours sleeping since my 21-month-old son has been born. The extra sleep is leaving me feeling wonderfully well-rested and alert during the days. I feel healthier, calmer, and more energetic. Based on my experience, I highly recommend you treat yourself to some extra sleep as well.
I’ll definitely call my sleep challenge a restful success. But my results aren’t perfect. Truth be told, I want even more sleep.
Looking back over my sleep log, it shows positive, but somewhat mixed, results. I’ve been contemplating my findings, and there are about ten things that have come to mind over and over during this sleep challenge:
It's tough to overstate how important getting good sleep is. Don't let those wanna be entrepreneurs lie to you. Giving up sleep to "grind" isn't helping you one bit. Instead, get a solid 7-8 hours every night and then attack the next day with extra productivity an focus. You'll get more done than you would've by staying up late the night before anyways.
Almost 2 months ago I was very fortunate to win a team incentive by my business mentor Kerry @smilefromtheinsideout and attend a Flow Retreat over 3 days and 2 nights.
I still can’t quite explain how it felt to just stop ✋. And I mean stop 🛑 everything that I normal do (and plan to do in my mind) being a mum, a full-time working professional and running 🏃♂️ (or trying to run) a business. It was hard for me to just relax (like really hard - I am always constantly thinking of what to do next even when I look completely calm 👀), but I learnt some mindfulness to help me relax and also discovered my love for water 💦. Whatever it takes to help you relax, whether it be doing your nails 💅, a massage 💆♀️ or a trip to Paris lol. Do it! Because happy (and relaxed) mums raise happy kids 😃 (I heard that on the radio this morning 😂). #findyourflow#mindfulness#relaxmode#keepcalm#doyournails#doyourhair#havesomewine#gotoparis#workouteveryday 💪 #sleep8hours#pray
Better late than never. Nick joined me this evening. We even gave each other high fives. Lol!
Now time for some relaxation! Hope you all have an amazing evening and a peaceful nights rest.
"The truth is I'm heavily medicated" jokes Anderson Cooper when asked by Jon Kabat-Zinn about how he handles a high pressure job. Disrupters include Ariana Huffington, Jewel, Headspace founder Andy Puddicombe, Karen May VP of People Google, Nest CEO, Eileen Fisher, Daniel Coleman-covering artificial intelligence, brain capacity, ethics, medicine. Mindfulness is a moment to moment, non-judgmental, awareness of the present moment. Wisdom and compassion are inseparable. Our brains are plastic. We can learn to respond, not react, and maximize our full brain potential. Stress depletes our attentional resources-mind wanders, mood & attention lowers (seen in athletes, undergraduate students, and military). Most of us are walking through life asleep! An 8-week practice, 8 min/day can grow grey matter and shrink the amygdala, fear centers. @jewel #mindfulness#beherenow @eileenfisherny @eileen_fisher @linkedin @mndflmeditation @headspace @andypuddicombe #townhallnyc#timesquare#timesquarenyc#iloveny#ilovenyc#cnn#huffingtonpost#compassion#love#rightmind#sleep8hours#dodometroboulot
We have been married for 14 months this week and I can proudly say that Calvin hasn't used anything over the counter in that time. He has totally jumped on the natural oily bandwagon with me and he feels great! We cook from scratch and eat at home and exercise daily, which helps a lot! Sleep is also a priority.
