As the search for the perfect beading thread goes on (with Miyuki/Nymos being close enough to the best for peyote/brick stitch so far), I latched on a few bobbins of the legendary Fireline. 😊 They arrived quite long ago, and even got used in the brooches pictured before, but now I have the time to write a tl;dr chunk of text on them.
I got one 0.15mm bobbin from a 'serious' beading shop just to see the 'real' thread everyone is talking about with my own eyes, and a couple of others - 0.10mm and 0.06mm (would never imagine it could be that thin!) - from a shop for fishers. The latter were the show-case items, 50% cheaper than usual because of the worn-out packing, but who cares about the packing if it's cheaper and suitable for experiments. 😃
The remark on buying show-case bobbins leads us to the thought that Firelines cost a fortune compared to other beading threads. 😣 Beading is not a cheap hobby, and beaders are used to shelling out money for seemingly meaningless widgets, but from the outside paying ~$10 for a ~50m bobbing might seem... unreasonable. Anyway, I started beading with the threads cheap as dirt, and I would say, Firelines are worth their price.
Putting financial questions to the side, Fireline is just a decent thread. It doesn't unwind in the process of beading, and it's almost impossible to pierce it with a needle (almost, but not impossible at all!), and it has no 'memory,' which means that if you don't like your piece, you can pull it off, re-use the thread and it will probably be the same, straight, not curvy.
And please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see much difference between the one marked as 'beading thread' and the one which is actually for fishing. Are the Firelines for beading waxed or... fused in a special way... or... what does make them marked as 'beading' at all? If you know, please let me know as well. 😊 💗💗Double Tap and Tag your friend 💗💗 Via : @russianfables
