#mmmay18 I was so excited to break out this very flawed but beloved dress that is a hack of the #seamworkmesa I made early last year using @spoonflower cotton knit. It was my first attempt to hack a pattern after a disastrous first attempt (so many mistakes and lessons learned), and it’s far from perfect. The neckline is wonky, I tried to add pockets that ended up a bit awkward, and I realized today that one of the seams at the bottom needs to be stitched back up. And yet, I absolutely love this dress, and it made me proud when I made it and realized I had the ability to hack my way to a #handmadewardrobe that was all my own. Also, a small peak at our growing garden AND the second photo was my reaction to seeing ducks wander into our backyard. @seamworkmag #mmmay#sewcialists#sewersofinstagram#sewinghack#spoonflower#alwaysmeasuretwice#gardeningforbeginners#backyardwildlife#vscocam
This unassuming photo represents the single greatest thing I've done as a sewist: sending off my PDF patterns to @pdfplotting. Their customer service is exceptional, and I had 12 patterns sent to me, done perfectly, in 3 days. I can't even express how miraculous and luxurious this feels. Find them at www.pdfplotting.com. It's $1.20 per pattern page and worth 10x that to save the time spent taping and cutting! #sewcialists#sewing#handmadewardrobe#mmmay18#losangelessews#sew#makethriftmend
I was lucky enough to make it out to a local thrift store with a good friend this past Friday. I found 4 articles of clothing to buy, 3 with the intention of altering. This is the first shirt, it's 100% rayon from h&m, and it started out too big on the body and too snug and short in the arms (seriously? Why??). I cut off the sleeves, leaving the seam attaching it in tact so I can just fold some of the sleeve fabric towards the bodice and sew it. I also took in the sides, but left the side vents intact. I'm considering putting darts in the back, but I will leave it for now. I can't wait to try different ways of wearing it! #alterations#secondhandclothing

Never really thought about wearing eye protection for #sewing , but I just had a closer call today with this needle than I've ever had in the wood shop. 😱 Needle hit part of the hook/eye tape i was trying to sew on and snapped. Got me right below the eye as it flew to parts unknown. Just revacuumed my #sewingroom , and hopefully no one finds it with a bare foot later on. Be careful fellow #sewcialists ! In the meantime, guess I'm shopping for no fog safety goggles for the sewing room!
👋🏻 Hello everyone 👋🏻 sorry for the lack of posts lately..I’ve been working on some pieces that I’m really excited about but unable to share just yet😬 what I CAN do is share some #behindtheseams looks at what I’m making with this beautiful emerald fabric! Keep an eye out because I’ll be posting some process pics here and on my behind the seams story! 💚
Friday frock! My newest sewing project. The pattern is from 1970; Simplicity 9108. Fabric is cotton sateen. A little more of a relaxed shape to what I typically wear, but it is gently shaped to the body; I like the way this pattern is cut to do that. I saw a dress on a tv presenter last night which was almost exactly this style - I think it’s pretty timeless. I think I’ll wear this a lot. #fridayfrock#memade#sewcialists#sewersofinstagram#sewing#sewingvintage#sewingproject#vintage
Went out strawberry picking with #HBE this morning and couldn’t help but wear out matching #ogdencami by @truebias in this delicious rayon from @workroomsocial 🍓🍓🍓
I need to make a million more of the #miniogdencami !! Not only is it adorable but it’s the most incredible stash-buster out there!!!
Back in front of my beloved green door 💚 So I broke my self-imposed #mmmay18 rule by wearing RTW jeans, but they’re well loved, altered, and mended so I’m not feeling too guilty. Also wearing my #punchneedle#sloanesweatshirt and my new belt from my favorite artist @kayeblegvad!
I’m tackling this fabric pile tonight if I can get my kids to bed early enough, and given the amount of sun and water that they’ve had after school it shouldn’t be too difficult. 😬🤞🏼
Now that the weather has finally turned hot outside it has turned freezing cold on the inside, so I want to make some of my favorite cool weather patterns in this light weight and super soft tencel French Terry from @imaginegnats . I’m particularly excited about the middle fabric (Green Mist), which looked a little gray online, but is a perfectly delicious light greenish blue, one of my favorites. As soon as Hannah saw it she said, “Mom, that one is your favorite color, mint.” Well noted, my girl! 😘👧🏻 It’s probably going to be a cardigan, because, restaurants. But there is also a good possibility of a short sleeved sweatshirt. Then again I could go for some lighter weight cropped Hudson’s. The darker blue is the same awesome tencel French Terry, so that is going to the runner up pattern.
What is your go to for cozy warm weather sewing?

I made a @blueprintsforsewing #aframeskirt . Its a fantastic pattern with beautiful geometric details. I lined it so then it doesn't catch on my tights. Worn with a cropped #dropsleeveblouse with added cuffs.
SHOW & TOOL:
This is a must have pressing tool. Bodies are not flat, and therefore neither are clothes. In order to press things as flat as possible, you sometimes need to press on a curved surface
This video shows my favorite way to press darts. From the wrong side, press them toward the center (or according to the sewing instructions, as they will vary). Then flip them over, spray a bit of mist at the dart point and press it again. Adding some moisture here will shrink out any puckers.
Reminder! I am giving away two of these spray bottles. See my previous post for how to enter the giveaway. I’ll draw and announce winners at around 10pm (PST), so you have about 8 hours to get in on this giveaway!
This dress looks just fine. Because no one is going to look at the side seams under a high wattage lamp on my work table. I claim victory. Unless I screwed up the measurements and then I don’t. #sewcialists#willhemforfood
Last Thursday we rode this charming gondola through a rain forest in St. Lucia. I wore the fruit dress I designed myself last summer for our trip to visit @elysegambino. The fabric is a sturdy cotton piqué from the late 60s or early 70s from my hoard. Tony wore the vintage Italian fruit car shirt that came to him by way of the infinite tiki circle. 🍎🍊🍓🍑
I’m trying to do some editing - I made these three dresses between 2014 and 2015 (from L to R: #colettehawthorn , #emerydress , #colettehazel ), and while they’re very cute (and still fit), I’ve never worn them much. I can’t tell if it’s the print scale or the style. Maybe both?
What are some reasons you don’t wear certain handmades?
