As the first westerner to travel behind the Iron Curtain to study human performance alongside some of the world’s leading biomechanical scientists and coaches, Scott Sonnon was initially exposed to Kettlebell lifting for sport-specific applications in Sambo. As he practiced with Kettlebell application in professional sports and the real world of military and martial art fighting, Scott would go on to train with the two most regarded coaches in kettlebell lifting: Valery Fedorenko and Pavel Tsatsouline. Coach Sonnon would use the immense knowledge he collected in those years of study to create the first ever Circular Strength Training approach to the tool which would become known as the Kettlebell Foundation.

In the early 90's, Coach Sonnon's travels led him to Russia in search of knowledge at a time when the West was obsessed with the latest gadgets and gimmicks. He knew there was no short cut to peak performance, and so he sought traditional methods that have stood the test of time. Exercises should have progressions and regressions to them.  You progress in the difficulty of the movement when the body is primed and ready for a more difficult movement.  And you regress when technique starts diminishing.  This way you are still working hard, just at an appropriate level for that given moment.

If we listen and learn from life's experience, then we come to realize that rarely do things occur in only one plane, only one dimension: push or pull, lift or drop. It is most often the case that we must apply our attributes when things go awry. When movements or events deviate from the expected, if we have not created a 'safety valve' to accommodate the surprise, we are hurt, injured, lost.

We need our strength in-between the fleetingly rare moments of perfectly linear events, especially so as we continue to age. If our strength only works in these perfect moments, then really... what good is it?

Leg Drive is one of the 7 Key Components of structure and one of the most important elements in Clubbell Training!

Leg Drive addresses the downward pressure pushing the Earth away to compel the swing, to resist  the forced rotation the Clubbell’s inertia attempts you to take, and to revolve and absorb the clubbell during 
moments of its free-fall through the exercise. If the ankles are tight, your knees may be forced to track outward or inward, or more often, they tilt your foot inward (inversion; falling arch) or outward (eversion;  over-treading), and prevent from tapping into the optimal pressing power  of mid-foot drive. 
Pushing the Earth away from mid-foot “grounds” you most effectively, and allows you to attain anti-gravitation. As the  clubbell swings, it attempts to pull you off of mid-foot, to the inside arch and outside foot sword as well as onto your heels or balls of feet. Exhale to resist the rotation, and maintain optimal leg rooting and drive into the Earth.

If the ankles are tight, your knees may be forced to track outward or inward, or more often, they tilt your foot inward (inversion; falling arch) or outward (eversion;  over-treading), and prevent from tapping into the optimal pressing power  of mid-foot drive. Pushing the Earth away from mid-foot “grounds” you most effectively, and allows you to attain anti-gravitation. The Clubbell Shoulder Park Squat… A complex exercise which includes several individual components seamlessly fused together into one complete motion. With multiple moving pieces, attention to technique is  a must. The truth is that poor technique is as trainable as good  technique. Every repetition that you repeat poor technique increases the  likelihood that you will embed this. Whatever you repeat, you will adapt to and make more likely, whether you want that result or not.

In order to make this tool work for you, you must first learn how to use it. That takes a bit of diligence in the beginning. By journaling your 
training and by rating these three variables, you will come to a better understanding of your body and you will calibrate your instrument. The skill of rating your performance becomes more finely honed with each 
use, until eventually you barely have to think about it. But you will have to think about it in the beginning.

These are the three variables you will rate after each training session: • Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE): the subjective evaluation of your effort on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the hardest you’ve ever worked.
• Rate of Perceived Discomfort(RPD): the subjective evaluation of your pain level on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the worst pain you’ve ever experienced.
• Rate of Perceived Technique (RPT): the subjective evaluation of your mechanical performance on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best possible form in that exercise.

If your technique is high enough (greater than or equal to 8) and your  discomfort is low enough (less than or equal to 3) you can hold even an exertion level of 10 for as long as your stamina, strength and endurance allow.

Personal growth is not matter of learning new skills but of slowly realizing the illusion of perceived limitations. 
Development follows a process of: 
1. I won't ever.
2. I can't.
3. I wish I could.
4. I wouldn't know how.
5. Well, I did do that, so maybe this, too.
6. I might someday.
7. I will eventually.
8. I can inevitably.
9. I am so close.
10. WTH, how did I do that?

The key mental switch happens between not knowing how (4) and realizing a measure of success (5). Small discoveries of potential accumulate and become psychological inertia to overcome the resistance of your belief in a self-limit.

Don't confuse failures with lack of potential. Failures are necessary to sift through incorrect perceptions and find the one possibility that works. 
When you're stuck at "I can't," keep imagining how you could, find allies and teachers, acknowledge your prior successes, and adopt the behaviors that you could achieve your goal, until your mind suddenly realizes that you did.
