Friday funny picture day! Picture 1 - pile of dog shit... Picture 2 - add some fruit and boom !!! dogshit smoothie bowl. I wanted to show that not everything is beautiful and perfect (I’m proud to say that includes me - imperfect that is!) but if we look beyond appearances we can be delighted with what we find! This was probably the best smoothie bowl I’ve had - texture, creaminess, strawberries fresh from the garden, nutrient dense.  I encourage you to experiment with imperfection. Instead focus on what’s inside, I promise it will be ok..

This is why I’m loving what I’m doing. It’s not easy for the client but by working as a team, regular checking in with what’s going on in the head, the heart and the body- we move forward. Change is hard. Moving out of fear is hard. Learning to live from love and believing in things you can’t see is hard. But it’s all possible when you are ready to go there. The visual story of that seems easier than actually doing it but when we give ourselves some time, reflection, care and acceptance, the walls of resistance start coming down. BRUNCH ANYONE??? Take away the rules about when you eat and what you eat. From children we are programmed to eat breakfast,lunch and dinner and snacks at certain times.  Our appetites have been trained... like Pavlov’s dog theory... hear the bell and your tummy responds..(google it, very interesting). So what if you threw that thinking out the window and just ate when you were hungry? Intuitive eating (or eating when you’re hungry) is so powerful but the trick is to make every meal nutrient dense as you may find you aren’t as hungry, as you’re body responds. The media has a lot to answer for by conditioning people to expect miracle makeovers, incredible weight loss and problems fixed in 12 weeks... Those things may happen (and there should definitely be changes) but slow and steady with solid tools and understanding leads to more permanent change. Last night I recreated a wonderful breakfast idea for my lovely ladies at Wagga Womens Health Centre Workshop. My inspiration came from those very cool folks About Life. Broccoli for breakfast??? Yes it is the perfect way to start the day with some delicious tahini dressing, sprinkle of seeds and avocado. Perfectly matched with bacon, sardines or whatever takes your fancy. This meal took 10 minutes and I think it demonstrated how thinking outside the traditional “breakfast square” is so much better - starting the day with nourishment rather than sugar laden cereals - it’s a no brainer..

A little blue algae in my smoothie bowl to get me through graduation this week. 
Before you turn away wondering why this crazy woman is eating algae, you should know that algae can aid weight loss, fight cancer, promote healthy heart function and reduce inflammation!!! All of that plus this particular blue/green has antiviral, antioxidant, anti allergic, anti diabetic and anti tumour properties!! The smoothie bowl is a great way to get some green stuff into you but mind the excessive fruit/ hidden sugar in granola!.

I knew I saved this for a reason. It’s that thing about taking the road less travelled, choosing the path that’s more difficult, moving out of fear...all that stuff that’s uncomfortable.  It’s always hard to hear and put into action but this is where the growth happens and maybe when we reflect with appreciation at the hard choices we made. Some lovely slow time on the weekend preparing for a special little dinner party.  Small crowd, favourite friends, simple easy food... my type of party!  I have to say I didn’t feel like peeling and cutting sweet potato so washed them well, cut them in half and smeared them with coconut oil, turmeric and cinnamon. It was sensational. Sweet potato really is an all rounder and good for you - providing slow release complex carbs, fibre, beta carotene and Vitamin C - which is enhanced by cooking it! So see how many ways you can use it - pancakes are pretty awesome too! .

Colour means diversity of phytonutrients and there’s also great diversity of texture and roughage in this salad.  It’s a bit OTT in quantity but it makes for easy lunches to combine with sardines and oil. To track back to my recent video on gut, providing unprocessed, nutrient dense foods support the microbiome environment and it’s also really important to think about our liver - it’s constantly cleaning and filtering so needs foods that help drive these processes. Bitter foods like rocket stimulate bile secretion and cabbage provides compounds essential for the phases of detox. Exercise, preparing food, showing care and love to others, meditation etc.  Initially it seems ridiculous and adding time pressure to your already busy day.. but with some discipline, maybe going to bed early/waking early and organisation, self care can successfully be incorporated into your day. Feast your eyes on this incredible breakfast I inhaled @aboutlifenm recently.  Steamed broccoli, roasted pepitas, avocado and a generous helping of bacon with an incredibly delicious tahini dressing.  I’ve never had a better breakfast! Filling up on essential minerals and nutrients, good fats and nitrate free organic protein set me up for a great day and no uncomfortable tummy bloat. I’ve realised how much gluten affects me now that I’ve strictly avoided it and had a little slice of pizza last night and within minutes my tummy was protesting! So my love affair with sourdough is well and truly over - I’ll give that up any day for feeling good more often. It’s just about bringing in other whole foods and making them yummy - as in this photo. Saying goodbye to habitual much loved foods can be hard but looking forward and being positive about change is rewarding for your gut and your brain! .

Feast your eyes on this incredible breakfast I inhaled @aboutlifenm recently. Steamed broccoli, roasted pepitas, avocado and a generous helping of bacon with an incredibly delicious tahini dressing. I’ve never had a better breakfast! Filling up on essential minerals and nutrients, good fats and nitrate free organic protein set me up for a great day and no uncomfortable tummy bloat. I’ve realised how much gluten affects me now that I’ve strictly avoided it and had a little slice of pizza last night and within minutes my tummy was protesting! So my love affair with sourdough is well and truly over - I’ll give that up any day for feeling good more often. It’s just about bringing in other whole foods and making them yummy - as in this photo. When avoiding gluten it’s time to experiment with bread alternatives. I have to say everyone was happy with roasted cauliflower “toast” as part of a burger substitute.  Roasted with cumin and turmeric it was really delicious and another example of unfancy yet nourishing.  Having food intolerances has been a gift in a way as it’s really made me appreciate how tricky it can be for those who have special food requirements and how to use food more creatively. Even if you don’t have an issue, I recommend giving this a crack - flavour is a bomb!.

I turned a doozy frozen dessert (it worked out but the flavour was ordinary) into a delicious smoothie bowl. I sliced it up into chunks and keep it in the freezer - it’s coconut milk based, dessicated coconut, seeds, nuts, fig or 2 so it’s a great base to add anything too. The lesson here is don’t chuck out food - it can usually be remade into something else- just freeze it until the idea comes to mind!!!. Swipe right to left for end result

Lamb on the bbq is a rare treat.  Trying to eat top quality grass fed red meat can be tricky but lamb is a pretty safe choice.  The aim is to fill at least half the plate with plant based foods, a quarter with quality protein (aim for palm size) and the remaining portion with complex carbs. Forgetting all the stats, at the end of the day, this plate is well balanced, easy to put together and most importantly- bloody delicious! .

Complementary medicine is a wonderful thing but unknown in exactly how it will improve your condition... because we are all different.  Because of this, it can be viewed with skepticism but I think it makes us really look inward and consider our unique makeup. How can the same solution fix everyone? There are so many variables. You can see the golden glow of this easy, tasty risotto care of some therapeutic grade turmeric - the special part was adding right at the end after cooking - heat destroys stuff including the healing properties of this very special spice! After a weary day I managed to throw together a few things for a salad. Put it on a bright platter and it looked pretty bloody appetising! I like to roast things for interest like beetroot, cauliflower, zucchini, onion and make unusual combinations like rocket, peas, wild rice, chickpeas etc. Basic olive oil, garlic and lemon is always a winner. Unfancy, tasty, nutritious- my type of cooking for busy people...

Friday...ahhh. The full moon has scattered sleep, holidays are over and I see 45 just on the horizon next month.  I’m posting this photo because I want you to see I’m comfortable in my skin - which I never gave much thought to, or would be a thing - but it has been! I used to shirk from photos of myself and be very critical- never proud. Thankfully I discovered a number of tools which helped me and really just made me take a good hard look at myself- I got real! Some of this help came in the form of @bodyimagemovement and other people I admire like @lynda_griparic_naturopath @summerinnanen @brooke_soulcollective to name a few. What are your thoughts on this? Like all the important life lessons, it usually takes some time living and having some shit happen before we start thinking about our health and mortality. I always avoided seeing a health practitioner unless it was absolutely necessary, so put a bandaid on a problem rather than addressing something deeper.  My wake up call came when both my parents were diagnosed with serious health issues almost simultaneously.  I’m so grateful for that flag because it started redirecting my beliefs and values. Now I put my health first- forego something else to pay for a health service I think is needed.  I know it’s the best investment for my long term wellness.  I don’t want to move into later stage life with shitty health - we only get one go at it so make it great! .

What’s not to love about a smoothie bowl? No rules, can be eaten any time of the day, use whatever fruit and veges you have in the fridge (grated carrot, beetroot, cold roasted sweet potato, celery...), using some sort of liquid and then decorate the top with the dedication of a preschooler!!! It doesn’t have to be fancy ingredients - whatever works for you on the day.  But this is a fun and great way to nourish your body with a wide range of protein, fats, carbohydrate and fibre sources in one hit.  Tip - Just think about the amount of fruit you’re using. This isn’t an opportunity to overload on sugar. Aim to keep your combination to 2 fruits and try to get some vegetables in there too. Happy creating! .

I was helping a client improve her fertility status, which we did through making some lifestyle modifications, changing the diet and investigating her existing blood work. Setting up the office snack - I was trying out a new yogurt today. Turmeric and coconut- it’s the bomb! Having intolerances doesn’t mean saying goodbye to delicious food but it does mean focussing on compliance, so this new discovery is going to be a more regular but small (its rich!) feature of my diet as it’s dairy free, anti inflammatory and satiating. I found this little beauty @harrisfarmmarkets - which is a new market to town.  Exciting to have more choice and diversity of foods which in turn supports a more robust microbiome. Get some yogurt into your guts! .

I’m experimenting with quick, easy meals for groups, in preparation for the wellness retreats I have planned this year. What’s better than chicken and peanut butter together?  This Thai style one pot wonder was delicious, fed the hungry mouths and delivered a good source of protein, healthy fats and phytonutrients ( I threw some greens in for the last 10 minutes of roasting). Yummy, nutritious, easy and unfancy - mission achieved! .

Forgiveness can be hard and seemingly impossible when we have been hurt.  These wounds can run deep and stay with us a lifetime if we choose to let them.  But it is our choice how we manage our hurt.  When I started to tidy up my health, inevitably I had to address my emotional and mental barriers. Some I’m still working on, but forgiving myself, past wrongs and clearing out space allows in the energy, people and outcomes I’m inviting! It’s simple if you choose it to be by asking yourself, “Does this attitude/feeling/belief serve me or bring value to my life?”. If the answer is No, throw it out, create space for the good stuff and look forward for what you want. Doing this will dramatically effect your long term well being. Choose ❤️.

I’m delighted to put the spot light on the younger legends of our holiday today. This meal was lovingly prepared over a few hours - perfect roast pork and fennel crackling, roasted sweet and white potatoes, rocket pear and walnut salad. What to serve up to a hungry mob on holidays that everyone can eat???? Slow cooked Persian Lamb salad my friends! The lamb in the slow cooker for  8 hours meant beach time was not compromised and then I threw the rest together 30 minutes before serving. It’s one of those salads you can add whatever you have around - beans, snow peas, rocket, pomegranate, quinoa. Luckily I made 2 platters this size because 3 dads and 3 strapping teenage boys gave it a good nudge!!! Unusual combinations of colour, texture and flavour attract young, inquisitive, developing tastebuds and I’m finding it’s usually received very well - keep putting it out there and your people will start to get used to it and love it too! ..

Last night the tastebuds got a trip to Morocco with this delicious number! Roasted eggplant with mince, spices, Greek yogurt, pinenuts and fresh herbs - and this one the kids requested again immediately! Choccas full of vitamins and minerals such as Copper, Folate, Manganese, B6 and Vitamin C, the eggplant is quite a versatile plant for cooking with. It’s antioxidant properties can be found in its skin and can be enjoyed in a diverse range of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean style dishes. If it’s not a vegetable you’d normally consider eating, why not give it a go?  Diversity of foods in our diet promotes enhanced gut microbiome and therefore better health all round - a win win for the tastebuds and the gut! .
