WIP, working on a pattern for the frame. I let a "pattern" choose me. It should be appropriate for the subject matter and style, consist of short segments (designs in the shape of infinity symbol work well), and most importantly, work well with the natural movement of my hand.
Memling modeled this Annunciation on the left wing of Rogier van der Weyden’s Saint Columba Altarpiece (now in Munich), but his innovative rendition portrays the Virgin swooning and supported by two angels, rather than kneeling. Like other fifteenth-century Flemish painters working in the wake of Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling cloaked religious imagery in the pictorial language of everyday life, paying close attention to naturalistic detail. This Annunciation takes place in a comfortably appointed bedchamber, though many of the domestic furnishings have symbolic connotations. The carafe of water, through which light passes uncorrupted, and the vase of lilies are symbols of the Virgin's purity, while the empty candleholder signifies her imminent role as bearer of Christ, light of the world. Gabriel's priestly garb alludes to the ritual of the Mass and, therefore, the incarnation of Christ. A soft glowing light falls on the Virgin and suffuses the room, elevating the scene from the realm of the ordinary and signaling the sacred nature of the drama. @metmuseum

Antique Painting on Porcelain Madonna and Child. This is a lovely 19th century miniature painting of the Madonna and child with beautiful colours. The painting is expertly crafted on a domed porcelain panel and set in its original ebonised oval frame. This is a very pretty piece dating from around 1860. Finished today, my latest icon "Weep Not For Me, Mother." It was painted as a step-by-step example for one of my students.
This icon is the visual representation of the words with which Christ addresses His Mother, according to the Canon of the Holy Saturday of the Byzantine liturgy. It depicts an image of the dead Christ whose figure emerges from the tomb in front of the Cross, and of Mary who seems to be supporting him in an embrace.

Sarah Affonso was a Portuguese painter. She is better know for being the wife of Portuguese artist Almada Negreiros, than for her own work.

The Annunciation, the announcement by the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and become the mother of Jesus, is celebrated by Christians throughout the world. The Feast of Annunciation is on the 25th of March, but in 2018, it was transferred to Monday, April 9.
It is the first icon in the series of The Twelve Great Feasts that I painted in 2014-2017 for a private collection in Vancouver. Egg tempera and gold leaf on gessoed wood, 11x14 inch.
