Leucospermum are some of the most popular members of the Proteaceae family and easily recognized by their flower-heads with long, conspicuous styles, each one thickened at its apex to form a pollen presenter. Together, the mass of styles look like pins bristling from a pincushion, a similarity that has given rise to the popular name for these Proteas. So appropriate is the name “Pincushion Protea” that it has replaced the original S. African name of “Luis's” which refers to the grayish-white, seeds found crumpled in the dried flowers. 🌾#protea#pincushion#CAGrown 📷: @resendizbrothers
This month I’ve been obsessed with the #protea flower and it’s unique look that looks straight out of a story book. This flowers spiky petals surrounding the center give it a regal look & from the side it looks like a crown 😄. I’ve got two bouquets left in the cooler.
Everything is blooming in #NYC and we’re excited. So, for the next week we will be honoring nature and posting some of our favorite flowers.
#Protea is both the botanical name and the English common name of a genus of South African flowering plants, sometimes also called sugarbushes (Afrikaans: suikerbos) or Fynbos. In local tradition, the Protea flower represents #change and #hope . #happysaturday#spring ✨
