I have no fear of losing you, for you aren’t an object of my property, or anyone else’s. I love you as you are, without attachment, without fears, without conditions, without egoism, trying not to absorb you. I love you freely because I love your freedom, as well as mine. 🙏❤️
How important is freedom & what does it look like to you?

Some moments we cannot capture on camera. Today, I interviewed a famous Serbian journalist who - after our interview - I admire even more. She told me something like this - not verbatim: “sometimes I look back at my life, and then I look at my country [Serbia] and I see where we are today and I start asking myself what did I ever accomplish, I have failed entirely, I did not create any change.” At this point, we had been talking for over an hour, she had shared with me her experiences of reporting during the Kosovo war. I responded something like this: “Yeah, I get it. Doing this work [working on political violence in our different professions], we have ambitious goals for changing the world and this is how we want to measure our success and impact, looking back at this world and where it has come. For some reason, we always focus on the macro-level. From what you told me today, it sounds to me like you have touched so many lives at the micro level. I am certain that many people, especially Albanians, remember you from when they shared their stories with you in the most horrible times, when they trusted you with their worst experiences, so you could report them, when you listened, and sometimes when you helped them when there was an opportunity. I am sure that these people remember you to this day, that you changed their lives in some way we don’t even know and that you made a lasting impression on them.” Then I asked her whether she knew “Cloud Atlas” by David Mitchell and I cited the famous quote: “Maybe our lives are just a drop in the ocean, but what is an ocean but a collection of drops?” It is these kinds of conversations that leave me so deeply inspired, when people that seem strong and powerful from the outside share their doubts and vulnerability, offering themselves in their most genuine, beautiful humanness. It is easy to lose hope in today’s world, to feel overwhelmed by failure and powerlessness. I want to keep moments like these as a reminder to myself when I am in doubt, frustrated and feeling vulnerable. If it were not for reporters like her, our times would be even darker and there would be even less truth to hold on to. #notesfromthefield

By now, it is well known that Donald Trump wants to jail reporters in order to force them to reveal their sources. “They spend a couple of days in jail, make a new friend, and they are ready to talk,” Trump told former FBI Director James Comey, according to a leaked memo Comey wrote in February 2017.

In the same memo, Comey, lately a darling of the press, described falling all over himself to support the president’s general view. When Trump mentioned jailing reporters, Comey wrote: “I explained that I was a fan of pursuing leaks aggressively but that going after reporters was tricky, for legal reasons and because DOJ tends to approach it conservatively.” Comey then reiterated his point about leakers, saying he saw the “value of putting a head on a pike as a message.” When Trump again advocated jailing reporters and made his sick joke about what might happen to them in detention, Comey wrote that he laughed at the idea.

The Comey-Trump exchange shows how fragile press freedom is in the United States today. These two men disagree about many things, but they share a desire to punish whistleblowers and the reporters who, in a democracy, seek to shed light on the hidden actions of government.

Dere skjønner hvorfor. «It sounds like a ruling on a death sentence.

There is absolutely no evidence, but lots of accusations that are fabricated. As the defense, we are entitled to seek evidence.

The new media law keeps the editor responsible if the writer is unreachable, out of the country, cannot be reached. If there is a criminal act at a publication, there are eight layers of possibilities before the ring of crime reaches out to the consultant.

If the consultancy constituted such a critical role or such a heavy crime, where is the evidence to prove this?

Prosecutor, just like the indictment, talks about acting as a ‘reference’, quoting two articles one of which talks an armed group to commit crimes but how is this link established?

How does my client get involved in this ring of references that foresees armament of a group which exists in an hierarchy’? I look at the indictment and there’s absolutely no reference about weapons or arms.

And another article that the indictment quotes refer to formation of a group with intentions to commit a crime. There’s nothing as such. It’s not even mentioned as part of the trial.

This is an effort to seek maximum penalty, by presenting heaviest crimes for those who simply and only perform independent journalism.»

Egyptian photojournalist, Mahmoud Abu Zeid, who has been in jail for nearly five years after being arrested for covering a demonstration in Cairo, has won the 2018 Press Freedom Prize.

Zeid was selected to receive the 2018 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize having bein picked ahead of other contenders by an independent jury of media professionals.

The prize would be awarded on May 2, to coincide with World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO said. “The choice of Mahmoud Abu Zeid pays tribute to his courage, resistance and commitment to freedom of expression,’’ Maria Ressa, President of the jury, said.

Zeid, known as Shawkan, has been in jail since Aug. 14, 2013, when he was arrested while covering a demonstration at Rabaa Al-Adawiya Square in Cairo.

In early 2017, the prosecutor in his case reportedly called for the death penalty despite the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detentions raising objections over his arrest and detention.

The 25,000-dollar prize recognises a person, organisation or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defence or promotion of press freedom, especially in the face of danger.

It is named in honour of Guillermo Cano Isaza, a Colombian journalist, who was assassinated in front of the offices of his newspaper, El Espectador, in Bogotá, on Dec. 17, 1986.

It is funded by the Cano Foundation (Colombia) and the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation (Finland). UNESCO would lead the 25th celebration of World Press Freedom Day next week in Accra. The global theme for 2018 is: “Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law”. The theme covers issues such as media and the transparency of the political process, the independence and media literacy of the judicial system and contemporary challenges of ensuring press freedom online.

Zeid, who is still in detention with more than 700 other people will have a hearing on April 24, (today), but no verdict is expected. If convicted, he could face the death penalty

If convicted, he could face the death penalty #olisa .tv #otv  #photographer  #mahmoudabuzeid  #unesco  #egypt  #cairo  #egyptian  #UN  #pressfreedom  #pressfreedomprize  #unpressfreedomprize

#UN #unitednations #unesco #pressfreedom #pressfreedomaward2018 #pressfreedomprize2018

In November 2017, I travelled undercover from Addis Ababa to the last village before the South Sudan border, travelling 900 km in public transport, without any media visa or permit, without any organisational backup. After attending the 10th Global Conference for Investigative Journalists in Johannesburg, I set out alone to see what was happening in the most troubled area of the country where government surveillance and censorship is at its peak.

The media is very important & I respect & admire journalists for the well needed & sometimes thankless work they do. But journalists are people too, and sometimes they are going to get it wrong, like other people, such as politicians, pastors or police.

The same way in which the media must probe & present the facts, while calling on all sectors of society to get it right, the society, including the media must be free to call on journalists to try harder when presenting the facts, to ensure they get it right.
It is not always to be deemed an attack on the press or journalists when this is done; in the same way, it is not an attack or theat on other sectors when we call on them for higher standards. To demand better, does not always automatically impute nefarious motive on the part of individual journalists, but it implies accountability & adherence to higher standards for self & the industry.

The press has an unmatched power to influence public opinion & we depend on it for accurate information that can make or break reputations or institutions. In the interest of all and in furtherance of the public good, let us all strive to lift our standards of communication, debate & commentary - let us put greater effort in testing information before we publish, weighing our thoughts before we comment & cultivating the humility to accept correction where necessary.
