Sorry for a morbid mermaid sketch...and forgive me if this is common knowledge, but its new to me. Twice last year (at least), U.S. Steel dumped toxic plumes of chromium and hexavalent chromium into LAKE MICHIGAN. Not once, but twice. Over 35 million people rely on the Great Lakes for drinking water. From OSHA, "Adverse health effects associated with Cr(VI) exposure include occupational asthma, eye irritation and damage, perforated eardrums, respiratory irritation, kidney damage, liver damage, pulmonary congestion and edema, upper abdominal pain, nose irritation and damage, respiratory cancer, skin irritation, and erosion and discoloration of the teeth." Not only is this obviously dangerous for us, but it slowly poisons and kills aquatic wildlife and plants. As someone who reveres our beautiful #greatlakes and is proud to call this state and planet my home, this is fucking unacceptable to me. .

Let’s talk about the Mediterranean!!! In a recent study, researchers investigated how adhering to the Mediterranean diet might reduce the risk of pollution-related death and cardiovascular disease.
Frequently hailed as a panacea for all ills, the Mediterranean diet focuses on fruits, whole grains, vegetables, olive oil, fish, and poultry while minimizing intake of red meat and processed foods.
The Mediterranean diet is rich in antioxidants, which are chemicals that mop up potentially damaging oxidized molecules called free radicals.
Researchers believe that antioxidants might be behind some of the long list of reported health benefits — and this list seems to get longer each week.
For instance, recent studies have associated adherence to the Mediterranean diet with improved cardiovascular health, reduced age-related weight gain, and a decreased risk of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and breast cancer.
This popular diet may also benefit the brain; one meta-analysis concluded that "[a]dherence to a Mediterranean diet may contribute to the prevention of a series of brain diseases." Another review concluded, "[the] Mediterranean diet is associated with slower cognitive decline and lower risk of developing Alzheimer disease." The most recent study to explore the potential wonders of this diet looked at whether or not it could protect against the damage caused by air pollution.
The study was led by Chris C. Lim, a doctoral student at the NYU School of Medicine in New York City. He explains the starting point of their study: "Previous studies have shown that dietary changes, particularly the addition of antioxidants, can blunt the adverse effects of exposure to high levels of air pollution over short time periods," he explains. "What we did not know was whether diet can influence the association between long-term air pollution exposure and health effects." The study tracked over 1/2 million people.

Plastic pollution in our oceans is one of the biggest threat to marine biodiversity and mankind. Whilst travelling I have been absolutely horrified by the amount of plastic debris found on these beautiful beaches. Please try and reduce your plastic consumption.

To put this into perspective, that's enough trash to cover every foot of coastline around the world with five full bags of plastic alone... EVERY YEAR. Single-use plastic items, such as bottles and caps, are the most common items found during cleanups. Mahalo Melanie for starting a petition to ban plastic straws in the city of Montreal! Despite banning plastic bags and bottles in public buildings, straws are still readily available despite a variety of alternatives available. In total Canada uses an estimated 57million straws per day 😳 and banning them in this major city could set a major example for others to follow. Its rediculous the number of plastic straws you find when you dive into the ocean. 😢 Human activity is so present in our society but you can see the impact well at the surface and beneath the waves, down to the ocean floor. 💔 The devastating fact is that we might have to face an empty trash filled ocean in 30 years and if we dont tackle the plastic crisis right now, we wont have oceans left to explore and admire for all its beauty and wonders.
