Today, I’m doing what I do best... interviewing. Le sigh! The one difference between today’s interview and all of the rest is that the interview team is almost all Black and represents an African and African American Studies Department. Does this make the interview easier? Hell, yeah! Not because less is expected of me or because I won’t face sexism, but because I and my work are understood in a way that other organizations just don’t get. .
Y’all, I’m tired. This has been a long 4 (four) years. I’m exhausted. I actually thought about it last night and cried myself to sleep. I’m tired of acting like everything is ok. I’m tired of affirmations. I’m tired of affirmations not because I don’t think they work, but because I don’t have to convince myself that I’m talented, worthy, beautiful, intelligent, etc., but rather I have to convince others. And these “others” don’t get it... don’t get me. I guess it’s more upsetting than anything. It’s “easy” in my romantic life because not everyone will find me or my personality attractive, but on the job market when your numbers illustrate savings and your research develops new findings, why or how can you continue to be rejected?! .
So, I have a reminder of a little old West Indian woman who people underestimated on my lapel. Because in the words of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.” As tired as I am, I’m going to keep showing up, writing, making noise, etc until something happens. And y’all, something extraordinary is bound to happen... because that has been my daily affirmation for the last four (4) years 😉 #shirleychisholm#interviews#interviewingwhileblack#blackphds#publicservant#policyanalyst#highereducation#professor#teacher#servantleadership
I'm producing an event called, NATURAL HAIR FETE 2018! It is a celebration of Natural Hair in all its Glory!
Meet Brittany Andrew-Amofah! @brittanyamofah She will be one of our Panelists at Natural Hair Fete 2018! Photo Credit: @tanjatiziana
Brittany is a policy analyst and political commentator seen on CBC News and CTV’s Your Morning. She is a proud naturalista, who believes in Black women having the freedom to do what they please with their hair. After years of wanting to perm her hair to “fit in”, Brittany got her first relaxer at the age of 17, but transitioned back to being natural 2 years later after her hair started falling out. Since then she’s been on a renewed natural hair journey, experimenting with wigs, protective styles, fros, wash and gos, braid outs, twists outs and the good ole bun. From once being on a strict hair regimen, to accepting the fact her lifestyle doesn’t always lead to the most healthiest hair care practices, Brittany can be seen rocking her signature natural looks any day of the week and on the TV screen.
After a rough two days I’m back to work... I’m typically not too transparent at work, but one of my coworkers asked me a question and I almost started crying. She could see that I was becoming emotional. It turns out that she’s going through something similar yet she’s 30+ years my senior, owns a home, has children, is taking care of an ill parent, etc. She is also a woman of faith... I definitely believe that God placed us where we need to be and that we can learn from one another. We can get through these issues as a community! My most immediate goal is to leave the office before the snow becomes heavier 😉
