I have a record of ‘near misses’ with these guys on the roads.... they are particularly slow fliers. This lucky fellow was perched safely in a thorn tree in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve. He lives to see another day.
It’s not all fun and games in the Northern Gannet colony. There is fierce competition between pairs to get the best nesting location. And why gather your own nesting materials (long grasses from the tundra-like fields beyond the cliffs) when you can steal from someone else?
When I first arrived at the colony, the big picture of so many thousands of birds together in one place captured my attention. But after awhile I begin to zone in on all the little scenes like this one that were unfolding around me. #abinnewfoundland
A Virginia Rail (Rallus limicola) crossing the road! 🤘 I’ve always struggled to get a clear view of these shy little marsh birds. I was sitting very still taking terrible photos of a different Rail hiding in the marsh grass, then turned around to see this one out in the open, walking across the road, followed by her chicks! #virginiarail#crownzellerbach
