The first time I heard the phrase "the answer to how is yes" was from Dr. Wayne Dyer. It turns out that it's the name of a book by a man named Peter Block. It's a phrase that's been on my mind a lot lately. 🤔 One can decide yes I want to do X, but the how on earth am I going to do X can be complicated, right? 💰💸🤷‍♂️ Block suggests that we use the question "how?" as a way to stay safe and keep ourselves from venturing into uncharted territory. 🗺️🚀 So what do you think? Is the answer to how being yes just philosophical mumbo jumbo or is there some wisdom in that that I need to figure out? I'm still stuck in what the yes is to what I think is a legitimate how? Am I making any sense? 😬

This book is helping me find a balance between having confidence in my capacity to live a life of purpose and being practical. I’m making some notes because it’s just that good!

-
Here is my take on "calling" and "commitment":
-
-
There are examples of people choosing work because they enjoy it, and not necessarily working for material rewards. A technical term is "the artist's way". It's somewhat of a "religious" path.
-
-
Although a shift is occurring, in the traditional eyes of "business", anyone who follows their calling is considered a fool - somewhat irresponsible with a negative connotation that they lack "loyalty".
-
-
As one of those fools🙈✋, I'd like to make an argument that idealists are actually more loyal than those who choose the traditional path. I might not be loyal to an institution but I am fiercely loyal to my own values and my own idealism.
-
-
You may ask why in the world would someone dedicate themselves to the success of an organization or institution if they're not being rewarded for it? My response is that your traditional metric is flawed and that 'virtue' is its own reward.

I started this book last night and was binging on it all day.
-
-
I desire to create a world that will solve for others what I have struggled with so much myself. I would not fight so much for others sense of power if I had never felt so constrained. -
-
The quality of feeling alive comes when we act on our values and bring our own model for a better organization into the world. This is what makes work meaningful.
-
-
One of my character flaws is that I am a dreamer. Most have said that I am not realistic and I’m out of touch with the harsh reality of life. That I view life from a very lofty perch forgetting what it’s like to be in the trenches. All of which is true...
-
-
This book is for my fellow idealists - those of us who turn away from practicality in search for meaning...which is often dissolved in a world of measurement and instant results.

In the high-tech world, speed is God and time is the devil. Speed becomes a value in itself, a measure of success, winning, and sophistication. Having time is always anti-system. The market engine does everything it can to overcome the time it takes for nature to make something grow: There is today such a thing as the twelve-day tomato.

Those at the bottom and at the margin are considered underserving; they are today's equivalent of scripture's widows, orphans, and immigrants. They are considered underserving because from a distance they seem "unproductive." This is what the free market consumer ideology system can't tolerate. We blame them for not producing. We say they don't contribute. There is no awareness of how hard it is to have little. This is the unforgiveable sin of the market ideology.

THE CORPORATIZATION OF SCHOOLS
Our schools are one place where the strength of the empire is especially clear.
Universities are increasingly marketplace-driven. They are revising their curricula away from the humanities and promoting programs dictated by industry that off-load the cost of education onto the public...They don't want people to have to take courses that aren't immediately useful to them. The humanities now have to justify their contribution to the economy, instead of to the quality of citizenship of the student.

It's a Commandment in Deuteronomy 15 that says every seven years people have to be released from debt...the rest of the law says that poor people have to be released from debt...The class warfare discussion - the discussion of "Why don't the poor work harder?" - is a mild collision between our free market narrative and the Torah. The consumer culture has marginalized the widows, orphans, and immigrants. What stands out every time you teach about the cancellation of debts for poor people, someone raises a hand and says, "There is no evidence that they really did that." That's the only text in the Bible that holds an imperial danger: the text that speaks about subordinating the economy to the common good.

Theologically, the underclass is against God's will. It also makes society unworkable for the vast majority. One manifestation of that un-workability is violence. The prophets, particularly Amos and Jeremiah, talk about the violence that is perpetrated against the vulnerable. It's a class war conducted from above. Class war is always conducted from above, but it's the people from above who immediately cry war if you point out any social differentiations.
