This natural gas flare is literally your taxpayer money going up in smoke. Today is your last day to act on stopping this wasteful policy! Sign the petition demanding that #RyanZinke and @USInterior stop wasting our publicly owned natural gas to venting, flaring, and leaking. #cutmethane

Happy Earth Day! I’ve had the privilege of seeing so much of the Southwest’s beauty over the past week with @tim_scholze, both in the sunlight and under the stars. The size and grandeur of the Milky Way always makes me think about how very small and fragile our Earth is. Here’s to protecting our home as much as possible so we can all continue to enjoy sights like this.
@sheila.ic and I didn’t get to do much outside today because we were fighting off spring colds, so we celebrated Earth Day early by venturing out to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park last week. Here’s the few from Andrew’s Bald, an open meadow surrounded by Fraiser fur and red spruce trees with a clear view of Smokey Mountains in the background.
Happy Earth Day, friends! 🎉🎉 Thought I’d take this opportunity to shout out some of the folks who give us inspiration and information that helps us travel more sustainably every time we hit the road:
@travelforwildlife for always gorgeous and often adorable wildlife photography and *ethical* animal adventures.
@dswt for amazing conservation work and daily pics of baby elephants (watch out for Emoli, the little guy we sponsor!)
@ethicalswim where I go hunting for sustainably made swimsuits.
@aprilveralynn who is super committed to helping folks travel sustainably and creating a community of awesome women at @ladiesleavingfootprints
@twowanderingsoles for road trip carbon-cutting tricks we are going to use hard this summer!
@wtwildflowers for great eco-friendly tips for travel and life (with bonus points for a super cute dog!)
@soultravelblog for more great ethical & sustainable travel info, along with beautiful photos (We’d like to be them when we grow up).
Who inspires you guys to treat every day like Earth Day? We want to follow them too!
Happy Earth 🌏 Day! In the past week, I’ve witnessed an endangered black-footed ferret in shortgrass prairie and nesting peregrine falcons on the top of my hometown @rockfordregisterstar newspaper building - both present tense because of the #endangeredspeciesact . I hear the cries that the ESA doesn’t work and point to these two examples + bald eagles, grizzly bears and too many other species to list here as shining examples that the ever evolving act - collaborative, transparent, inclusive conservation works for people and wildlife worth celebrating on Earth Day. #earthday#endangered#prairie#blackfootedferret#rockymountainarsenal#ilcp_photographers#publicland#ourpubliclands
"They're doing it with a very short comment period and absolutely no public hearings" @NorthernPlains member Sue Beug speaking about #SecretaryZinke 's plan to gut methane rules w/o public accountability. #cutmethane
It's hard to believe the @commongroundmt film premiere is this week. Last year, a few friends and I did a hard thing - a 240 mile traverse from our doorstep across the wildest place I have ever known. It was a very emotional journey for me personally, an experience that I'm still trying to understand. But I learned one thing for certain: community makes us stronger. Community makes us braver. Individuals are capable of amazing things, but communities have the power to change the world. .
Join us Tuesday, April 24 at 7pm. Visual Communications Building at MSU (11th and Grant).
"There's an opportunity for them to get more royalties, and while they're doing that they can keep the air cleaner. It's a win-win" @PRBResCouncil member Wayne Lax speaking about #SecretaryZinke and @USInterior wasting #taxpayer natural gas on #ourpubliclands#cutmethane
It’s really impressive just how many massive waterfalls are in the Southeast. Hurricane Falls is right above the put in for a sweet kayaking run, the Tallulah. Worth a hike around the State Park there especially on a release day. Stoked I was able to get out there this spring!
Join us on Thursday, April 26 at 5:30 pm at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center to tell the Washoe County Commission we want to keep Washoe wild! The Washoe County Commission is seeking input on their proposal to get rid of a majority of the Wilderness Study Areas in Washoe - a proposal that ignores years of hard work by local officials, conservationists, ranchers, landowners, business owners, and other stakeholders. Our quality of life depends on protected wild places to recreate. Our wildlife needs wild places where their habitat isn't threatened with roads and development. If there can't be meaningful Wilderness protection to balance the proposed development, this entire process needs to STOP. #wildwashoe#ourpubliclands

May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, and leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.

As we’ve been road tripping through the Pacific Northwest, it has become embarrassingly obvious to us that -although we both grew up here - we don’t know nearly enough about the Indigenous peoples whose land we treasure so much. Thanks to an awesome blog post by @caliwolf for @hownottotravellikeabasicbitch , on this trip we made a point of learning about the Native Americans who first called these places home.
Oregon’s Steens Mountains wilderness, where we crossed paths with these beautiful wild horses, was originally inhabited by the Northern Paiute tribe. They were pushed out of their native lands and onto reservations in an attempt to concentrate them and make them give up their traditional lifestyle, aka “civilize” them (as though white people are such a great example 🙄).
As we travel more around the US, we will strive to seek out and share information about the Indigenous peoples who first inhabited the places we visit! We hope you all do the same!
Wayne Lax will be in DC this week to speak out for #Wyoming families affected by methane waste on #ourpubliclands . It's time to hold #SecretaryZimke and @USInterior accountable for trying to gut commonsense rules on methane pollution. Add your comments before April 23rd. Link in bio.
