Whether it’s, mental health, skin health, digestive health, menstrual health, emotional health, we always have to work at it. Sometimes a little. Sometimes a lot. Find what works for you but remain open to the fact that your needs will change and so too should your diet, exercise, sleep, current medication etc

5th, final, and most important tool in my rehab toolbox: nutrition. People keep asking me how I’ve rebounded so quickly this past year - back to my full strength, to running half marathons, and to having all of my organs functioning optimally again. A staph infection in my spinal canal and blood stream. Rapidly losing 16 pounds and weighing in at 105 pounds in the hospital, being on 3 months of around the clock opioids, muscle relaxers, steroids, anti-inflammatories, and an antibiotic pic line for 6-weeks. I definitely had reason to be concerned about how my internal systems would function after all of this havoc was wreaked. 
My family who was taking care of me during this whole journey knew I was letting go of a lot of things I couldn’t control - trusting doctors even when I didn’t have any answers or ending up with a misdiagnosis. The one thing I continued to stick with through it all was my Metabolic Typing lifestyle. The hospital and the nursing home tried to force feed me cow dairy filled, sugar filled, soy filled, filler filled empty calorie crud, but I put my foot down at every turn because I knew I wouldn’t heal without the proper fuel. I laugh thinking about my family smuggling in my organic protein shakes and probiotics! 
Fast forward to 1 year later. Feeling better than I have felt in years and enjoying a shopping trip to @sprouts to help a Metabolic Typing client use her unique food list and macros to find the right foods to fuel her life!! My reaction when someone tells me they can’t adhere to and don’t enjoy their overly restrictive fat loss diet! 😔

This is an aspect of the fitness industry that really saddens me. Personal trainers/online coaches either sell out in desperation or simply have no morals or simply just are not educated enough about nutrition and begin to promote overly restrictive diets that come in many different forms. One of the most popular being liquid calorie versions. Or they may set daily meal plans for clients where they tell them exactly what to eat, how many meals and what times etc.

A persons daily nutrition is a very individualised process. There is no one size fits all approach. If a PT or online coach gives you a set meal plan, RUN A MILE! I can’t stress this highly enough. What if there are foods on that plan that you don’t like or even are medically allergic to? Or maybe you suffer from IBS like symptoms when you consume certain foods?

At #domhaighfitness we never set meal plans. The process of setting up a clients nutritional goals is detailed and thorough. A multitude of factors are considered, some of which are, ✅ Gender ✅ Age ✅ Activity levels ✅ Training times per week ✅ Goals ✅ Any medically diagnosed issues ✅ Lifestyle factors ✅ Previous dietary habits ✅ Level of experience tracking nutrition 
There are more, but you can get an idea that it isn’t as simple as many think.

Picking on two of the aforementioned factors, I want to mention previous dietary habits and experience levels in tracking in a little more detail. 
1️⃣ If someone comes to me who has had very poor nutrition for a while, then they will benefit from a very basic approach when it comes to nutritional targets. At first we will set a small number of mini habits to slowly adopt, which will add up over time. Examples of which are aiming to consume a certain amount of water per day, including protein and veg with every meal etc. I may also use a simple infographic to help them understand portion size and what should be on a normal plate. 
2️⃣ Someone may have had fairly decent nutritional habits before they chose to work with me, but hadn’t ever 👇

Your body's immune system protects you from disease and infection. But if you have an autoimmune disease, your immune system attacks healthy cells in your body by mistake. Autoimmune diseases can affect many parts of the body. No one is sure what causes autoimmune diseases.

Dinner was a huge hit tonight for missy moo. After mom and dad had their shrimp and chicken corn fajitas, baby had avocado and banana, pear and spinach, and carrot. She was so hyper after the fact! I’m still doing puréed food with her until I feel she’s ready to eat with her hands, which to me feels like it probably won’t be until 9 months. I know many who do baby led weaning from the start, but it’s just not something I’m comfortable with for Emma and I, plus, I am slowly introducing foods that her digestive system can handle which isn’t really possible with BLW. This is what works for us. There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to babies and families. We all need to do what works for us. Mom’s have enough guilt as it is. If you think about it, the term body goals is completely ridiculous. None of us will ever look the same as anyone else. Why is it that we choose to overlook the beauty in that and instead let ourselves think that we’re not good enough? We come in all different shapes and sizes, we are unique, and that’s pretty amazing.

This doesn’t stop at body composition either, it goes for sport as well. Don’t think that just because you’re build a certain way that there are sports you can’t try. Tall, short, big, small... different people move in different ways.

DESPITE what you may hear & read, the idea that in order to reduce risk of running related injury the ankle (subtalar joint) should be ‘neutral’ when the body weight passes over it is NOT supported by any data or evidence. In a study that examined 120 healthy individuals both non weight-bearing and weight-bearing, not one subject conformed to the criteria of “neutral” alignment. The whole concept of 'overpronation' is fraught with inaccuracies.

When it came time to work off 💪🏼 that extra Baby Fluff, let me tell you that was when I really realized how much I let myself go. A time that was filled with feelings of weakness/ sadness and honestly disgust 😣with my body. A feeling no woman or new mama should ever feel, but yet so many of us do.

This go around I want to do things differently, and do this pregnancy healthily & MOST IMPORTANTLY Happily ☺️

Truly, #selfcare is the cornerstone of #wellness.  Without self-care, stress takes over, and excessive #cortisol production kicks in. I find a lot of people get comfortable with a particular workout program or diet and are reluctant to change it up ... yet they aren't getting the results they want! 🤷‍♀️
To me, this is the definition of insanity! 
Everyone is different and there is no "one size fits all" workout program/diet (so just cause Billy or Sue got great results doesn't mean u will too!). So if u are doing the latest trend and not getting anywhere.... forget about it and find something that WORKS FOR U! 💪 👉and don't bother to complain about lack of progression if u aren't honestly putting the work in! "I've tried everything to lose weight!" Have u really? Usually I find this not to be true haha. If it is true though.... why bother to continue to beat yourself up in the gym and deprive yourself of all the foods u enjoy since it's not getting u anywhere... and it can't be a lot of fun, right? Get into a doctor and see if something with your health is sabotaging u! 👨‍⚕️ 👉work starter not harder 👩‍🏫

Astro has been struggling with entering and exiting a vehicle. She's comfortable while riding in the vehicle, but the getting in and getting out is overwhelming for her.
We have spent multiple weeks using positive techniques, spending time assisting her, being patient etc... but it was not helping the situation at all. In fact the dog was just becoming more clever and putting the brakes on and refusing to move forward.

That's why I chose to add the 2mm metal prong collar. This makes it uncomfortable for the dog to refuse to move forward. I never use a forceful amount of pressure, I use a very subtle forward pressure. The dog begins to learn that it is her moving forward that relieves that pressure.

By removing the option to refuse, the dog must re strategize by moving forward. 🤘🐕 #Noonesizefitsall

When you develop a strategy and work tirelessly it should always lead to some result. Have you developed a strategy but you are not seeing the results you expected? Are you working but the results are not showing from the work you put in? PAUSE!! It is fine if your strategy does not work from the get go. It does not mean that you failed. It does not mean that you are not a good planner or your plans were not good. Yes we can sit and plan and have some great ideas but we will never know how good they will work until they are tested in your environment.  Strategies need to be tired and tested before we can fully say they are 'Great Strategies'. Keep pushing!! Keep going!! Keep tweaking!! This is how you will find the perfect strategy for your business or that special project. When we plan we usually see the ultimate end. Do not stop until you can envision it with the results you are getting. Every business is Younique and no one strategy will work for one business. The results will differ tremendously. A 'Great Strategy' is one that has pass majority of test and is able to weather the storms. Test your strategy until you reach the point of a 'Great Strategy'. Put in the work. #ThursdayThoughts: I haven’t written much about food lately. Depending on how often you glance at my stories you may know that I eat an awful lot & thoroughly enjoy all the foods I used to consider “bad”, from bacon cheeseburgers to extra rich ice cream. I don’t really waste my time with frozen yogurt anymore. 😉 
I don’t post much about food mainly because I don’t dwell on it. I just thoroughly enjoy it and move on to the next activity. I still discover new challenges to face on occasion, previously unrecognized disordered mindsets that I have to root out.  But mainly, I’m #walkinginfreedom and I LOVE IT. 
But this is what’s happening now: I’m starting to get back into #competitive running. The ultra thing is fun & still very new to me, and I know I will discover how truly remarkable other runners are one of these days. I’ve been inexplicably blessed in my results so far. But I want to be stronger & better, I want to break 1:30 in the #halfmarathon AND I want to break 20hrs in a #100mi and hell, I still want to break 18 in the 5k. These are all doable for me... but I’m not ready for a single one of them right now. And I don’t know if I can do all three in a single year. They’re pretty diverse goals in terms of distance and pace. I need to better 5:47 pace for 3.1mi, 6:51 pace for 13.1mi, and 11:59 pace for 100mi. I’ve been very close to the first two, and my 50mi time (under 9hrs) suggests that I can do that for 100mi... but I haven’t done any of them yet. I want them all. I want to be fierce & fast & fitter than I’ve ever been!

I’ve been slowly ramping up my mileage, though my training is still very relaxed. One of the things many runners obsess about is their diet, with or without a focus on #weightloss. I don’t want to lose a pound. But I definitely could clean up my diet & it would be beneficial for my health & fitness. No, I don’t eat like this every day, these were two fabulous #vacationmeals. But my regular diet has #roomforimprovement.

I’m still a long way from being #vegan or even #vegetarian and don’t think I ever could be as I struggle to digest #beansandpulses but my diet now comprises loads of veg, a little fruit and a small portion of fish or meat, a tiny amount of dairy and definitely #glutenfree What’s your eating style? Do you stick rigidly to it? I think it’s important to choose food that you like, it stay away from processed food and experiment with taste and texture. There is #noonesizefitsall

I like the term "Flexitarian" diet, or better yet, I don't believe that one needs to label their way of eating. We should eat fresh, whole foods that provide us with energy. We should listen to our bodies and see what food nourishes us the most. We are all different and adapt depending on our surroundings, time of life, and time of year. Certain foods may fuel you today, but that may change 6 months from now. We may crave something in the winter, but not in the summer. Yes, I generally follow a pescatarian diet because I personally feel the best eating that way; However, every once in a while I do enjoy a good piece of red meat! 😉It's perfectly okay to test out different ways of eating. See what kinds of foods fuel you the most and pay attention to the foods that negatively impact you. You don't have to place a label on yourself or follow a strict way of eating 100% as long as you are giving your body what it needs to be your healthiest, happiest, energetic self! 😊💪

Celebrating last day of detox with sautéed apples 🍎 with blackberries in coconut 🥥 oil, ginger & cinnamon. I’ve confirmed during this process that raw veggies 🌶🌽 and fruit 🍉🍎 are hard to digest. Leg Day = I Die ☠️.. Look I’m gonna be real honest here because I get asked often about workout ideas to do and I’m just not the girl for that. I can make up routines & I have for myself before however I have ZERO attention span ( clearly 🎵👆🏽💃🏽 ) So if I’m not being told what to do by a trainer or a trainer on a video.. I’m going to end up dancing & just wasting time turning a 30 min routine into an hour bc I get distracted 🤷🏽‍♀️😆... So for workout ideas, I do home fitness programs. It’s gets it done and I can remain focused, keeping my dance outbreaks to a minimum 💁🏽🤗 .. The main thing to remember about finding a good workout plan to follow is to just follow the one that WORKS for Y O U and the lifestyle you live okay ? ☺️💋 #noonesizefitsall #doyothang #rockthatshit

Your own *Eating Style* is my preferred way of framing the food choices I make and often a suggestion I use for patients too. 🌟 It’s much more lifestyle-focused and comes from a place of CHOICE to feel a certain way, rather than being forced to live a life of sacrifice and lack. That’s not fun!! 😬 Part of the reason why the mindset around ‘dieting’ doesn’t work. 
Certainly eating habits and avoidance are needed during a certain phase of treatment or healing but the emphasis should be on the abundance of foods one CAN have along with the short & long-term benefits (energy, weight loss, brain performance, happiness or calm feelings) that will go along with it. 😀 💫
Many of us have got used to feeling a certain way for a long time and don’t have a reference point for know how much better we *could* feel! I certainly feel better today at 41 🙈😆 than I did in my 20s....and that trajectory I feel just keeps going up, not down, as I get older. 🧘‍♀️💃🏻🙋‍♀️

Rescue dogs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. There are those that adapt to new surroundings quickly and with ease and then there are those like Jones. Some rescue dogs suffer serious PTSD related to the events and troubles from their past. Having seen first hand some of the dangers, fights, injuries and abuse that Jones has been through, being able to walk him over the fields like this is a HUGE milestone. Yes he may be whining, but that is nothing compared to when we first moved back to Shetland. He used to be hysterical; jumping, pulling, biting the lead and howling his head off. I always think of the 3 P's: Patience, Persistence and Perseverance. With rescue dogs (as with everything) there is no one size fits all.

Yes we can sit and plan and have some great ideas but we will never know how good they will work until they are tested in your environment.  Strategies need to be tired and tested before we can fully say they are 'Great Strategies'. Keep pushing!! Keep going!! Keep tweaking!! This is how you will find the perfect strategy for your business or that special project. When we plan we usually see the ultimate end. Do not stop until you can envision it with the results you are getting. Every business is Younique and no one strategy will work for one business. The results will differ tremendously. A 'Great Strategy' is one that has pass majority of test and is able to weather the storms. Test your strategy until you reach the point of a 'Great Strategy'. Put in the work. After another very successful Personalise Your Practice workshop yesterday @recreationsthmelb , I’ve just been looking at the feedback forms from all participants. One of the questions was “what did you enjoy or find most useful about today’s workshop?” - here are some answers:

My intention & purpose of this workshop is for each participant to go away feeling much more confident about alignment & modifications for their body. We are all unique individuals, and it’s important to realise & remember that “no one size fits all”...not just in movement, but in nutrition, spirituality/inner work, relationships & career too.
