Название народности происходит от от греческого βάρβαροι или barbari. Сами они называют себя амазиг или амахаг — «свободный мужчина».

Арабские завоевания в Магрибе с VII века не сильно изменили национальную картину, однако в значительной степени повлияли на культуру берберов. Многие утратили идентичность по мере интеграции в арабское общество, исламизации и забыли свой родной язык. Однако сохранили культурные отличия в виде традиций и обычаев, которые сильно отличаются от культуры других жителей Магриба.

Самобытность берберов проявляется в особенностях традиционной одежды, народных танцев и песен, фольклоре и ремеслах. Сохранившаяся среди туарегов и имеющая отчетливо выраженные геометрические формы графика языка - тафинаг, существовала уже 4 тыс. лет назад. В последнее время усилиями берберских культурно-просветительных организаций она возвращается в обиход и подкрепляет разговорные диалекты. Надписи в стране дублируются на арабском, французском и берберском языках.

A beautiful young lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus) in Moremi Game Reserve. This bird, widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, perches at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, small birds and rodents moving about at ground level.

Albinos are the persons who most suffer a bit all over Africa. In the past years in Mozambique, and especially in the north, there has been a wave of kidnappings of albinos, with macabre objectives related to witchcraft and alikes. In this picture, the covering towel shows, unfortunately, this current situation. It served for a good picture, but I would liked it more if the child face was completely uncovered.
