The Nabataeans were one of several nomadic tribes that roamed the Arabian Desert. However, they distinguished themselves from the rest in power and wealth by gaining control of the trade routes between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea. Although their kingdom is no more, they left behind their cultural heritage for posterity to marvel at, especially the caravan-city of Raqmu, modern-day Petra, the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom. Although Petra was settled as early as 9,000 BC, it was the Nabataeans who built its iconic architecture. This hidden city is accessed via a mile-long narrow canyon named Bab Al Siq at the end of which the city begins to reveals itself. Prepare to be enthralled by the many magnificent buildings, tombs, and temples carved into the red sandstone cliffs and featuring a blend of Greco-Roman and Eastern architectural elements. It’s most famous structure is the Al Khazneh, believed to be the mausoleum of Nabataean King Aretas IV. Ad-Deir is the second most popular attraction here. The High Place of Sacrifice, accessible after a long hike into the mountains, rewards visitors with a spectacular overhead view of Petra. The place is magical and mysterious and steeped in history. Worth a visit in one’s lifetime.

Royal Tombs - Petra, Jordan
Petra was established ~4th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataean Kingdom. The Nabataeans were nomadic Arabs who invested in Petra's proximity to the trade routes by establishing it as a major regional trading hub Petra became the focus of their wealth. The Kingdom's capital continued to flourish until the 1st century AD when its population peaked at an estimated 20,000 inhabitants. By 700AD, the city had been abandoned, and it wasn't 'rediscovered' until 1812.
-
The city is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it's carved. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, and UNESCO has described it as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage".

In April 2009 , Grandmother , mother and I ventured into Jordan. A journey of a lifetime. Two places remain deeply routed in my heart : The Wadi Rum desert and its lunar scapes and Petra, this wonder of the World. Mohamed , our guide, recommended that rather than jump on a donkey and ride it we gently strolled down and through the Siq and feel the ancient Nabatean City draw us in. It was peaceful , early morning with no crowds , a beautiful stroll to finally encounter the MOST beautiful site ever . A dream, a mirage #Petra#,originally known as Raqmu ,is a historical and archaeological city in southern #Jordan#. Oldies but Goldies.
After sorting out half of my pictures that I took over the last years (only 10.000 more to go) I came across these ones from Jordan.
Most of them have been shot at the archaeological city of Petra / Raqmu - a city which was "lost" to the Western world for hundreds of years. Now, the city of stone, hidden in the Jordanian valley, is one of the new wonders of the world.

Once it was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom between 400 B.C. and A.D. 106.
