The mother in this beautiful photo by Julia Margaret Cameron, ‘Mrs Duckworth at Saxonbury’ (1872), looks exhausted.
Cameron was interested in the difficult side of motherhood and in her photography she was concerned with giving a realistic and psychological portrait of women.
After being widowed, the mother in this photo would go on to marry Leslie Stephen and give birth to Virginia Woolf.
Woolf idolised her mother, talking of Julia often in her diary. She once exclaimed “for we think back through our mothers if we are women.” Julia Stephen appears in many of Cameron’s photos. This one is taken from our book ‘Julia Margaret Cameron’ which includes writings from herself, Virginia Woolf and Roger Fry.
