Today is Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. I have somewhat mixed feelings about the commodification of trauma (I've written about it specific to Armenians, and continue to look at its different examples in culture as well) so it's kind of a strange day for me, but I also want to honor the individuals who survived and persisted in spite of their trauma, or perhaps even because of it.

So I'm thinking about my maternal grandfather Diran Voskeritchian, who lost almost his entire family in the Genocide of 1915, was rescued from the worst circumstances, and survived to become a well known architect in the Middle East.

He endured immense trauma. I have endured trauma of my own as well, and connect to my grandfather in many way including in our creativity and in our shared will to persist. Here we are in this photo, grandfather & granddaughter in Iowa in the late Seventies. Survivors, each in our own way. Yes. ☮❤️🇦🇲 #Armenian
Today marks the 103rd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. This beautiful monument behind me is known as The Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument which was unveiled in April, 1968 to honor the #martyrs of the #ArmenianGenocide perpetrated by the Ottamon government, as well as to honor all victims of crimes against #humanity . Yesturday my family and I visited the monument and placed flowers at the #memorial . To watch my daughter and nephews participate was surreal. Our ancestors were taken to the desert without bread and water, their homes, churches, and literature were burned; but yet Armenia still stands, just like this beautiful monument behind me. Armenia is not just a physical place on the map, it's a piece of us we will always take with us and never let go.
The monument serves as a beacon for Armenians all around the world and its importance cannot be understated as we continue to remember and honor all of the martyrs of the Armenian Genocide. 🇦🇲🇺🇸 .
