#tbt Vinyl. Found the mother lode of my old 45s & albums. My youthful musical tastes historically ranged from pop to jazz greats. I was OBSESSED with Olivia Newton John, Donna Summer, Madonna, Air Supply, Barry Manilow, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, but also Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Nat King Cole & one hit wonders like Rick Springfield. But Donny Osmond was the only one I ever wrote to regularly (with the exception of Brooke Shields). Starting at age 6. In 1973, he released the album “Alone Together” & for someone who was learning English as a second language, this seemed like a mistake. How could you be “alone together?” This made NO sense to me so I wrote him a letter telling him how much I liked him but also to point out his mistake & that he really needed to be more careful in the future as some of us were just learning English & his “mistake” was causing a lot of confusion. I explained that “alone” & “together” were opposites so how could you be “alone together?!” I remember becoming so obsessed with this Donny mistake that I wrote my half brother Mario in California an entire letter to tell him ALL about it. My brother who is 9 years older than I must have thought I was a loon but he kindly wrote me back & told me to give Donny a break; that when I was older I might grow to learn that “alone together” was actually a thing. I will have you know that Donny Osmond did write me back. I got a glossy photo of him smiling back at me with his toothy smile & signed with his autograph. He never did address my complaint about his grammar mistake but all is forgiven. My brother was right. I did grow up to learn all about “alone together” & it is my favorite state of being. (Sorry Donny!) And thus began my illustrious habit of writing strongly worded letters to express my opinion & my crushes. #somethingsneverchange #tbt #vinyl #donnyosmond #alonetogether #thethingsmymotherkept #oldrecords #mychildhoodinabox #precociouskid #mayrathisisyourlife

It’s the last few days of clearing at my mom’s place before I close it up & good God, SHE KEPT EVERYTHING OF MINE! So I am taking you along for the ride that is “Mayra, this is your life” on this #TBT. Here my bosom buddy @lisavigg & I in Paris in my dorm. I couldn’t come home for Christmas that year because the airline tickets were astronomical & my mom couldn’t afford it so Lisa’s parents gifted her a ticket to me and we spent the most unforgettable & magical Christmas together in the City of Lights. One of the highlights of the trip was gathering at Centre Pompidou and meeting a bunch of international tourists. Lisa, who is a gifted singer, gathered us all in an impromptu jam session & lead this multi cultural group in a singing circle that had strangers fall in love with each other in an instant. We sang “We are the world” and “Do they know it’s Christmas” & pretty much every Beatles song that ever was & I doubt any of us there will ever forget the moment or that Christmas. It is seared in my heart and is among one of the most ALIVE moments I have ever lived. And check out the Jersey hair! Have I told you I have the most amazing people in my life & I am blessed beyond words? I am. #tbt #bosombuddies #christmasinparis #mymomsavedeverything #mayrathisisyourlife #bighairdontcare #jerseygirls #junioryearabroad #amotherslove #thethingsmymotherkept
