Do you think captivity teaches your children how to respect animals and nature? #sayno #emptythetanks #BILLS203 #marinelandcanada
We're hitting MarineLand for the massive opening day protest in Niagara Falls, Ontario. 💦 🍁
I'm organizing a carpool with the Direct Action Everywhere Buffalo and Niagara Falls, NY chapters. Cause this place is the dumps. The animals suffer terribly-think blind walruses from water chemicals, bears in unnatural cement enclosures, and one very lonely orca in a tiny tank. People should not be supporting this atrocity. It needs to close. 💧
Let's hang and do activist things and eat vegan food on Saturday, May 19. 🇨🇦

The event link is in my Bio. And send me a message if you want! 🚥

Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean Park
-
Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean Park was announced back in 2012 and is currently nearing its opening set for September 28, 2018.
-
Haichang Ocean Park Holdings has acquired four orcas for Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean Park. Assuming there has been no deaths, births or transfers, the four orcas are currently in a temporary holding facility at Dalian Tiger Beach (Laohutan) Ocean Park, which is also owned by Haichang. There is very little information about Haichang’s orcas. The orcas were captured from the wild in Russian waters in 2016 and belong tot Russia’s transient populations. According to estimates from the Far East Russia Orca Project (FEROP), only a few hundred of these whales remain in Russian waters. Despite this at least 19 young juveniles have been removed from this population since 2012 and a quota has proposed an allowed take of 13 killer whales in 2019.
-
The very first photo of the orcas has emerged a few days ago (photo 3). In this photo two of the four killer whales can be seen.
-
Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean Park's orca exhibit will be outdoors and include a show pool, three back pools and a medical pool (photo 7). The show pool's width will be approximately 140 feet by 73 feet at its widest point. The right and middle back pools are approximately 110 by 80 feet and the left back pool is approximately 85 by 60 feet. The rectangular medical pool is about 50 by 20 feet. The exhibit will also include an underwater viewing area (photo 5).
-
Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park’s grand opening is September 28, 2018. The park will go into trial operation as early as August. Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park is expected to debut with four orcas on display.
-
Other animals that will be put on display at the parks incude, whale sharks, belugas, polar bears, dolphins, penguins and sea lions. The construction of the exhibit that is thought to be for the dolphins can be seen in the 8th and 9th photo.

Junior, the young killer whale who lived out his short life stuck in the 'warehouse' of Marineland Canada, where he lived abused and neglected.
The warehouse is a windowless building with a shallow dirty pool where animals are hidden off from the public. He died in June 1994 due to brain damage.
-
Both Kanduke and Keiko had also spent time in Marinelands warehouse and thankfully were bought out. Another case of this warehouse was Duke, a bottlenose who was considered too ugly to be shown to the public.

The newborn killer whale found dead on a Copper Bay beach, British Columbia, in early March was part of the threatened northern resident population.
-
A DNA study recently confirmed that the young killer whale was a northern resident — a genetically unique population of fewer than 200 animals.
-
The female calf was separated from her mom just after birth. A tissue analysis and final report may take another month to complete.
-
Northern resident killer whales are fish-eating orcas and live in the waters off northern Vancouver Island and the mainland BC coast as far north as southeast Alaska. The population of these whales is small and has relatively low potential for growth—yet between 1977 and 1997 their number did increase. Since 2000, the whales’ population has declined by roughly seven percent—mostly due to man-made water pollution. Northern resident killer whales are potentially at risk from threats such as organochlorine and toxic-chemical contamination.

Linyi Polar Ocean World
-
Linyi Polar Ocean World is an indoor aquarium that is currently still under construction and is set to open in the coming weeks. Construction began in March 2016 and has experienced multiple opening delays. The park is located at the intersection of Fenhe Avenue and Yan'an Road in Linyi Economic Development Zone and is adjacent to Linfen Zoo and Botanical Garden.
-
Linyi Polar Ocean World is made up of two buildings (seen in the first photo). The larger of the two buildings is the main aquarium which includes a wide array of sea life plus a large "performance theater" for their marine mammal show which will include species such as sea lions and dolphins. Phase 2 of Linyi Polar Ocean World is the "Killer Whale Bay," a separate building just for orcas that will be completed in 2018 and will be connected to the main aquarium.
-
According to news reports Linyi Polar Ocean World will be getting two orcas. However, the aquarium’s official website recently said they will have four orcas. As of April 2018, the main aquarium is in the final stages of being built while Killer Whale Bay and the "polar marine animal quarantine holding base" are still under construction.
-
Other animals that will be displayed at the park include beluga, dolphins, polar bears, arctic wolves, arctic foxes, penguins, sea lions, sea turtles, sharks, walruses, seals and thousands of rare tropical fishes in the world.
-
Around the beginning of February 2018 animals including seals and arctic foxes began to arrive at Linyi Polar Ocean World and the aquarium will be opening in the coming weeks. The Killer Whale Bay will be opening at a later date and the orcas have not arrived yet.

Throwback to this gem moment right here. 😍 My family and I were visiting Niagara Falls and we decided to stop by Marineland. While the day was fun, it opened up my eyes about how different things are between marine parks and I only hope that in any situation, whether it’d be there or here, that the animals are being taken care of in the best way possible.
Anyone would be able to identify my buddy would be greatly appreciated!

On Thursday, SeaWorld Entertainment reportedly disclosed in a filing that they had been alerted that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission staff recommends the company face a civil punishment or administrative hearings for violating federal securities law.
The SEC and U.S. Department of Justice have been investigating the company for comments made by executives in August 2014 about the impact from the Blackfish documentary, an anti-captivity film, and trading in the company’s securities, the company admitted in a June SEC filing. At the time, the company’s executives were accused of misleading shareholders about how the anti-captivity film hurt SeaWorld’s business and attendance at the theme parks.
A fine is one the punishments SEC staff could recommend. SeaWorld executives plan to tell the SEC why it doesn’t deserve to face any penalties, the company said in the filing.
SeaWorld received a Wells notice last week – what the SEC sends to a person or entity to explain proposed charges and to give them a chance to explain themselves in return, the SEC’s website states.
The company is also facing a lawsuit from investors and a criminal investigation currently being conducted by the Department of Justice.

A recent video shows Nord, a 9-year-old wild-caught Russian transient, mating/attempting to mate with Naja, a 7-year-old female, at Moskvarium in Russia. Another video also shows Nord trying to mate with 11 year old female Narnia.
-
Both Naja and Narnia are wild-caught orcas. Naja was 4 years old when captured and Narnia was about 5 years old when captured. Being separated from their mother and pod at such a young age, it’s unlikely that they learnt how to properly take care of a calf. In the past, many first-time captive mothers, who were seperated from their own mothers at young ages, have lead to rejections, aggressions towards the calf, and death.
-
Naja is also just 7 years old, if she gets pregnant she will be only 9 when she gives birth to the calf. In the wild, the average age at first observed birth is around 12-14 years. Although it’s possible for females to give birth prior to this age, two captive females gave birth at the age of 7. Wild females have both sexual and social maturity before bearing a calf. Within wild pods, there are social mechanisms which prevent young females from mating before they are mature enough to raise offspring appropriately.
-
These social mechanisms often don’t exist in captivity where ‪they live‬ in the fractured artificial pods. As a result, captive females often give birth to an age younger than this average. For Naja, being separated from her mother and pod at such a young age combined with an early pregnancy can lead to her rejecting her calf.
-
Nord is also much younger than the avarage age of males to become sexually mature. According to the center for whale research male orcas become fully sexually mature at age 25. Between ages 12 and 15, their dorsal fin begins to grow taller and straighter, indicating the onset of sexual maturity. They typically don’t mate until after the age of 20.
-
Due to Moskvarium being very secretive about their animals, it's not known if the females are on birth control or not.

Within wild pods, there are social mechanisms which prevent young females from mating before they are mature enough to raise offspring appropriately. - These social mechanisms often don’t exist in captivity where ‪they live‬ in the fractured artificial pods. As a result, captive females often give birth to an age younger than this average. For Naja, being separated from her mother and pod at such a young age combined with an early pregnancy can lead to her rejecting her calf. - Nord is also much younger than the avarage age of males to become sexually mature. According to the center for whale research male orcas become fully sexually mature at age 25. Between ages 12 and 15, their dorsal fin begins to grow taller and straighter, indicating the onset of sexual maturity. They typically don’t mate until after the age of 20. - Due to Moskvarium being very secretive about their animals, it's not known if the females are on birth control or not. - caption: @emptyallthetanks photo/video: Moskvarium & @/brunghild_the_shield_maid
