Wake up and smell the tulips! I loved being in Seattle’s Pike Market Place. I literally ate everything in it and so very much enjoyed seeing flowers everywhere. I thought this was extremely gorgeous at one of the small businesses inside. 😍
We had a great time yesterday at Veneta Elementary celebrating Earth Day! We brought chicks and lady bugs to show the kids many sides of the ecosystem that makes our food. Thank you to all our volunteers!
Also don't forget to stop by our market for Opening Day on May 5th and take advantage of the Produce for kids program! All kids 12 and under get 2 tokens to spend on whatever fruit or veg they want!
I REALLY wish I could tell you that when I shell fava beans, I have a meditative moment. Like I’m channeling the wisdom of my Iberian ancestors, the women before me who sat at tables and slipped the inner beans from their bitter and tough skins.
But I can’t. Peas, beans, I’m all for- I love those repetitive moments of calm. But fava beans? I HATE shelling fava beans. Some people claim removing the second skin isn’t necessary, but I find it too bitter to be palatable. So, I first blanch the whole pods, slip out the beans, then pull each one from it’s second skin.
Because I see this simply as a tedious task I can’t get excited about, there are very little fava beans consumed in my house. I muster up the energy to make one or two dishes with them, but that’s about it. These went into a grain salad with salami and pecorino.
How do you feel about fava beans? Worth it or no?
Just an old box filled with seasonal goodies. The dogwoods, Ranunculus, Clematis and mix of foliage are all locally grown. The box was my husband’s, but I don’t know where he got it. Hmmm, time to ask my MIL.😄
Hope your week is off to a great start.🌿
Don't underestimate foliage! 🍃 Plants with amazing foliage can take planters to the next level. Dusty Miller us a great cold tolerant plant that is wonderful in contrast with bold flowers. We will also have coleus and grasses available this weekend 💚
Current obsession: Ginataan Jackfruit (Translation: jackfruit in coconut milk)! Don't knock it until you've tried it. I correlate jackfruit as a sweet fruit and the thought of eating one of my favorite fruits with coconut milk is a no-no. But yassss! This girl is a believer!! It works as a savory dish too! .
The weather has finally warmed up around here! The grass is starting to green up, the magnolia is about to bloom, and I was able to work on my tan while backfilling the high tunnel yesterday! It is so nice that spring FINALLY decided to show up!
Today's dahlia was another fun one we grew last year. Its name is Bristol Fleck. I didn't have quite enough tubers to offer any for sale, but next year I will have loads of them! 📸 by @hsaundersphoto
