'This is the story of the curse and the kiss, the demon and the girl. It's a love story with dancing and death in it, and singing and souls and shadows reeled out on kite strings.' - Laini Taylor
@huntress.of.fictional.worlds tagged me to do #5bookishthingsiamthankfulfor - thanks for the tag! Feel free to do this if I've tagged you or even if I haven't☺️
1. Late nights with a book you cannot put down
2. Book mail!
3. Book shopping!
4. Being able to instantly connect with someone who also loves one of your favourite books
5. The online book community that I've been involved with for about 7 years that has absolutely changed my life and reading for the better!
Guess who decided to play with the negative filter!! (1)
The "no effect" photo for comparison. (2)
Laini Taylor's writing is mesmerising!!! Plus, the illustrations at the start of every story are wonderful, and the way they begin to make sense as you read on is just amazing!! Seriously, look how beautiful they are!!! (3)
A sense of dread surrounds all three stories and you can't help but fear for the outcome!
I think that the second story "Spicy Little Curses (such as these)" is my favourite! "Hatchling", the third one is a very close second, and I didn't expect that when I started reading it!! #lipstouch#lipstouchthreetimes#lainitaylor#shortstories#illustrations#negativefilter#bookstagram
Recently, I've read "Lips Touch" by Laini Taylor, but though the writing style is very nice and the magical atmosphere, too, I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. 🌌
Zum Inhalt ◇
Three tales of supernatural love, each pivoting on a kiss that is no mere kiss, but an action with profound consequences for the kissers' souls:
In Victorian times, goblin men had only to offer young girls sumptuous fruits to tempt them to sell their souls. But what does it take to tempt today's savvy girls?
Spicy Little Curses
A demon and the ambassador to Hell tussle over the soul of a beautiful English girl in India. Matters become complicated when she falls in love and decides to test her curse.
Six days before Esme's fourteenth birthday, her left eye turns from brown to blue. She little suspects what the change heralds, but her small safe life begins to unravel at once. What does the beautiful, fanged man want with her, and how is her fate connected to a mysterious race of demons?
I read “Lips Touch” by Laini Taylor a few months ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Once again, though, I wasn’t fond of the US cover. At Book Depository, I found this UK version that matches the gorgeous style of my copies of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series. Now it’s finally here! And it still has all the awesome illustrations inside!
Which author do own the most books for but have never read any of their work? For me that's Laini Taylor!
I've got a few trilogies or a couple of books from some other authors but 4 books means Taylor just wins it.
Definitely need to read some of these soon but have a long shortlist TBR! Maybe next year? 🤔
Evening! Can you believe it's the last day in August already 😱 it's going to be Christmas before we know it! This is my August wrap up 😊 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🦋Lips Touch - 4⭐️ - loved it! To be fair I love anything that Laini writes though! This is a collection of 3 short stories, and they're all beautiful ❤️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🦋Captive Prince - 3.5⭐️ - I enjoyed this one, but I did have some issues with it. It's very rapey, which given what the book is about is to be expected, but it was unnecessarily graphic in my opinion (I'm really NOT prudish at all by the way, and I struggled with it a bit!) And I found the violence in it a bit hard to stomach. Overall though I did enjoy it and I will carry on with the series at some point! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
🦋Red Rising - 4.5⭐️ - love love loved this one!! Brilliant story, loveable characters, wonderfully written - I'm only taking half a star off because it did take me a little while to get into it. There's a lot of world building at the start and it's quite hard going, but once you get into the swing of it it's amazing! ⠀
🦋Daughter of Smoke and Bone - 5 million ⭐️!! - this was a reread, I'm not gonna bore you by going on and on about it again, you already know I love it! All I'll say is, if you haven't already, READ THIS BOOK!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
QOTD: what was your favourite read this month? Out of the new ones I've read, Red Rising was my favourite 😊 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Night of Cake and Puppets // Laini Taylor
⭐️ 4.5 // 5
Side Note: Sorry this review came so late. Hurricane Harvey just hit, and the storm is worse than intended. Houston and the surrounding suburbs are going crazy, but I’m glad to finally find time to post this.
MAN OH MAN IS LAINI TAYLOR A QUEEN IN ROMANCE, FANTASY, AND SEAMLESSLY ADDING INTRIGUE AND CURIOSITY INTO HER STORIES.
From the get go I was strung back into the beautiful landscape of Prague with the hysterics of Zuzana to keep me company.
Zuzana is just an incredibly hysterical character that I will forever love. I’d forgotten how compassionate, sassy, and original she was until this story reminded me.
This companion to the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy follows Zuzana and Mom on their first date, and I’d recommend you read it 110% if you enjoyed DOSAB. It’s incredible to see from Zuzana’s and even Mik’s perspective on this situation, and I couldn’t help but fall for their relationship.
I never expected Zuzana to use those wishes for the date, and it created a magical experience. I’m not going into too much detail due to spoilers, but the level of thought put into this story astounded me. It was something I never knew I needed until I devoured it in one sitting.
NOT TO MENTION THE BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK DONE BY LAINI’S HUSBAND. There’s only a few pieces shown in the ARC, but it’s making me supremely excited to see the final cover and works inside.
This whole story is just an artists dream!
I’d recommend reading this story right after DOSAB as I did because it pertains to the first book.
The hardcover of this story is released September 12, 2017, and I’d urge you to buy it if you love DOSAB and haven’t read this story. It’s perfect and brings allllllll the squishy/ happy feels!
#grimdragon#grimdragonjuly An author that's seen you through so much of your life. . #thenandnow
I may have told this story before. But each time I tell it a little differently. I was in a bad bad place a place I didn't think I couldn't escape from. The only escape route I knew was kinda... the grand finale.
Didn't want to take that route if I didn't have to.
I felt weak though like I could fight the forces surrounding me & ruining my life. .
So I walked to the book store down the road. It was a wet green day, I was living thousands of kilometres & many states away from where I am now. Humidity thick like soup, legs sticking together with a slug like schloooop feeling of chaffing thighs. .
It had been so long since I could afford a book. Then I found it. Recommended by Patrick Rothfuss he said "I wish I wrote this book." I was unfamiliar with fantasy at the time (I didn't even think THE book sounded like my thing) but I felt I could trust Rothfuss because I enjoyed his work so much. .
The book was Daught of Smoke & Bone, the author Laini Taylor. That day my life changed. I escaped. .
I've been reading Laini's creations for 6 years. A lot has happened in 6 years. I escaped an abusive relationship. I realised I was non binary. I stopped binge drinking. I finished uni. I moved to Victoria. I wrote a book (it's not like it's published but hey I wrote it) & I began getting help with my mental hygiene. Laini Taylor's books have come for the ride & helped me find beauty in language, myths & faerie tales, as well as love myself & the diverse & fragile condition of being alive.
I have been looking for this for what seems like forever (admittedly not all that hard 🙊) but I've found it and I'm looking forward to it. It should be a quick read which is helpful right now as I've hit a wall with my reading. I think the pressure of my massive TBR is getting to me 😳
